Earlier sources: Space

Space research and engineering study the universe and build the systems used to reach and observe it. Follow astronomy, spacecraft, launch systems, satellites, exploration, and Earth observation.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

533 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Bridging the gap between stars and planets ↗

The formation mechanisms of brown dwarfs (BDs) and free-floating planets (FFPs) are poorly constrained. The two main competing scenarios include the star-like scenario, where these objects correspond to the least massive gravitationally unstable fragments of molecular clouds, and the planet-like scenario, where these objects form in a circumstellar disk and are subsequently ejected after a dynamical interaction. A new generation millimeter interferometer, such as ALMA2040, is required to disentangle the relevance of these scenarios. For this, ALMA2040 must provide the appropriate performance t…

High-frequency water megamasers as precision probes of black holes, galaxies and cosmology: A case for a next-generation sub-mm/mm interferometer ↗

Water megamasers in the circumnuclear disks of active galactic nuclei are among the most precise probes of supermassive black holes. VLBI imaging of 22 GHz disk masers has provided geometric distances to independently constrain $H_0$, accurate black hole mass measurements, and sub-parsec views of accretion disk geometry. ALMA has opened a new window into water maser transitions in the sub-mm/mm regime, which trace temperatures, densities and disk regions that are inaccessible at 22 GHz, and can be observed at higher spatial resolution and with less free-free absorption. However, current detect…

ALMA2040: Submillimeter-wave Limb Sounding of Venus and Mars ↗

Venus and Mars are unique laboratories for understanding the evolution and diversity of terrestrial planets. Despite their broadly similar rocky compositions, their atmospheres, climates, and surface environments have evolved into dramatically different states. Understanding the physical and chemical processes responsible for these divergent pathways is essential for interpreting terrestrial exoplanets and their habitability. By the 2040s, spacecraft missions will provide unprecedented close-up observations of Venus and Mars, while ground-based facilities can provide the long-term monitoring n…

ALMA2040: Mapping the Spatially Resolved Dust and Star Formation Physics Driving High-z Galaxy Assembly ↗

Interstellar dust reprocesses approximately half of the starlight emitted across cosmic history. However, dust temperature, which is essential to convert continuum flux into dust mass, molecular gas mass, and obscured star-formation rates, remains largely unconstrained on sub-galactic scales at high redshift. While single-band ALMA imaging has characterized continuum sizes for hundreds of z>1 galaxies, single-frequency measurements cannot separate the dust mass column from the local dust heating. To date, spatially resolved ( 1, with ongoing programs within a few years adding at most a few doz…

Properties and limitations of linear models for mutual coupling in 21 cm arrays ↗

Mutual coupling between elements of low-frequency arrays is a leading systematic for 21 cm cosmology, leaking bright foregrounds into otherwise clean regions of the power spectrum. Many mitigation models describe coupling as a linear combination of uncoupled signals re-radiated from neighboring feeds, but data suggest additional mechanisms. Inspired by antenna scattering theory, we decompose coupling into an antenna mode, constructed from translated isolated responses and expected to be removable by linear combination models, and a structural mode, the remainder. Full-wave simulations of HERA-…

NASA Welcomes All Ages, Experience Levels for Space Apps Challenge ↗

Registration is open for the 2026 NASA Space Apps Challenge, a two-day global event on Saturday, Nov. 14 and Sunday, Nov. 15, where teams work to create solutions inspired by NASA’s most ambitious exploration goals and making use of the agency’s free and open data. The annual challenge, often called a hackathon, is an intensive, collaborative problem-solving experience where participants tackle real-world challenges created by NASA subject matter experts. This year’s Space Apps Challenge collectively supports three major focus areas: returning humans to the Moon, preparing for missions deeper…

The gravitational constant and the cosmic microwave background ↗

The CMB constrains the gravitational constant $G$ at recombination to a few percent of its laboratory value, but the effect of $G$ on recombination itself is usually absorbed into a global fit rather than made explicit. We return to the semi-analytic description of the acoustic spectrum to ask how the acoustic scale $\ell_A$, the equality scale $\ell_{\rm eq}$ and the damping scale $\ell_{\rm damp}$ respond to a variation of $G$ during recombination, and where $G$ enters the residual ionization of the dark ages. We use a modified version of CLASS in which $G$ is varied through $λ_G \equiv \sqr…

Patchwork: automated lattice surgery and space-time partitioning for real-time decoding ↗

We introduce patchwork, a lattice-surgery compiler for arbitrary multi-qubit Pauli measurements on a prescribed narrow-corridor two-dimensional surface-code layout. Systematic geometric rules simplify stabilizer placement and gate scheduling, including for logical $Y$ measurements implemented using twist defects. We introduce measurement circuits and schedules that, together with protruding lobes of $Y$-extension patches, preserve the full effective code distance for all numerically tested code distances. To support parallel decoding, we develop a wavefront algorithm that partitions merged lat…

From Axion Detection to Dark Matter Astronomy ↗

A global haloscope network could turn an axion discovery into astronomy of dark matter substructure and transients. We combine interferometric phase, spatial coherence, and spectroscopy to study the formation and evolution of axion substructure through measurements of flow directions and velocity distributions. For tidal streams, a four-site forecast shows how longitudinal and transverse velocity dispersions can be measured jointly. Interpreted with dynamical and population models, these measurements could test axion production scenarios. Extensions to miniclusters, axion stars, and emitted bu…

How to assess evidence about Space

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
