Exploration

This space thread follows exploration through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

5 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Recent sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

High-throughput exploration of refractory high-entropy alloys for strength and plasticity ↗

Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) are compositionally complex materials which have been demonstrated to have the potential for exceptional strength at high operating temperatures. However, their composition space is vast, and other property requirements, such as acceptable plasticity at room-temperature, must be met. Here, we leverage recently published, state-of-the-art deep learning models to predict compressive yield strength at 1,000 °C and room-temperature plasticity of >100,000 RHEAs. Multiple candidate materials were identified which exhibited exceptional balance between strength a…

Bio-inspired exploration of butterfly wing morphology guides deep reinforcement learning optimization of robotic flight ↗

How wing morphology shapes flight performance is a central question in functional biology and bio-inspired robotics, yet these relationships are difficult to isolate in living organisms. Here, we use a robotic butterfly with tunable wing geometry to systematically characterize morphology–performance relationships by combining motion capture with morphometric analysis. We then use deep reinforcement learning to search the morphological design space and identify wing designs optimized for aerodynamic performance. The resulting designs increase lift and thrust performance by 339% and 46%, respect…

Reactive Exploration of Unknown Environments for Redundant Robots using Virtual Model Control ↗

The exploration of confined, occluded, and partially known spaces poses significant challenges in robotic manipulation. The overall pose of the robotic arm must be carefully controlled to respect tight geometric constraints while avoiding newly discovered obstacles. We address this problem by proposing an active exploration approach for redundant robotic arms with an eye-in-hand camera configuration. Our approach navigates and acquires information in real-time based on a novel scoring method that directly selects a target voxel from the unexplored space using the robot's current state and expe…

Tall buildings with diagrids: design exploration and assessment of the influence of the architectural form on the structural behavior ↗

Tall buildings with diagrids offer several advantages over alternative structural solutions, including the possibility of reducing the dimensions of interior cores and freeing up interior space. However, the interplay between structural systems and architectural form is not always adequately considered during the early stages of design to support quantitative decision-making. In this study, a database comprising 1000 tall buildings has been generated using parametric modeling. The buildings range in height from 140 to 300 meters. These buildings have then been subjected to seven ground motions…

    A Design Space Exploration of Async/Await ↗

Many modern programming languages include some form of asynchronous programming. In particular, a growing number now have what we call straight-line asynchrony: attempts to provide asynchronous functions that look similar to synchronous functions, thereby enabling asynchrony without introducing complex control. These languages often share construct names like “async” and “await,” which suggests that they have deep semantic similarities. Yet, a close examination reveals that these languages are quite different along several dimensions, often subtly. These differences have real semantic conseque…

Mathematical Exploration of Wave Motion due to Earth-Space Force (Ground Action) Consequences ↗

This study mathematically explores wave motion induced by earth-space forces specifically ground actions. Developing and solving governing differential equations provides insights into intricate propagation dynamics caused by these forces. Numerical simulation modeled wave behavior and results were analyzed to understand ground action impacts. Initial wave generation and subsequent propagation were simulated using COMSOL Multiphysics which models wave dynamics in physical media. Partial differential equations describing wave motion alongside Fourier transform techniques were applied to analyze…

Depth-driven UAV obstacle avoidance with teacher-guided exploration in cluttered environments ↗

Obstacle avoidance in cluttered environments presents a significant challenge, as it requires rapid perception and decision-making in partially observable three-dimensional space, particularly for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operating with constrained onboard vision. Compared with traditional map-based approaches, end-to-end methods based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) directly learn a direct perception to control policy, but they often require large amounts of data and exhibit unstable exploration. To address these issues, we propose SAC-DGPF, a teacher-guided obstacle avoidance fra…

How to assess evidence about Exploration

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
