Earlier sources: Space

Space research and engineering study the universe and build the systems used to reach and observe it. Follow astronomy, spacecraft, launch systems, satellites, exploration, and Earth observation.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

535 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Hypergolic Hybrid Rocket Propellants: Current State of Research and Future Directions ↗

Green hypergolic hybrid rocket propellants are being investigated as a potential solution to the ignition challenges of hybrid rockets and as safer alternatives to toxic hypergolic systems. This review summarizes recent progress in hypergolic hybrid rocket propellants, focusing on ignition behavior, thermochemical performance and motor-scale combustion and propulsion characteristics. Drop-test studies are reviewed to identify promising propellant combinations and to examine the effects of a wide range of chemical, material, drop-dynamic and environmental parameters on ignition characteristics.…

Exploring the dark sector through galaxy dynamics in clusters ↗

Abstract Galaxy clusters are among the most powerful laboratories to probe fundamental physics, from the formation of cosmic structures to the nature of dark matter, dark energy, and gravity. Realizing their full potential requires accurate and unbiased determinations of their mass profiles, a longstanding challenge in cluster cosmology. In this context, the kinematics of member galaxies in clusters has become a key tool to reconstruct the mass distribution and investigate the dynamical properties of clusters. The advent of large spectroscopic datasets has enabled the application of increasing…

Characterisation and modelling of lightning strokes as point events in time and space ↗

Abstract. Lightning is a spatio-temporal phenomenon comprised of individual strikes with specific occurrence times and spatial coordinates. This study models and characterises lightning strikes from single thunderstorms, treating each strike as a point event. Utilising real-world datasets, we characterise and model lightning strikes’ physical properties. Our analysis involves two severe UK thunderstorm systems selected based on published synoptic analyses. These systems enable subdivision of the lightning dataset into subsets, each representing a distinct thunderstorm. Our two major storm syst…

The Limits of Tidal Circularization and Atmospheric Escape for Mini-Neptunes and Super-Earths: The Case of TOI-2257 b ↗

With a 35-day orbital period and $\sim$0.5 eccentricity, TOI-2257 b occupies a sparsely populated corner of transiting mini-Neptune parameter space and may lie near the orbital distance at which tidal and atmospheric escape process become negligible. To test this hypothesis, we performed simulations of the combined stellar, tidal, and atmospheric evolution and confirmed that TOI-2257 b does lie near this boundary, regardless of whether it formed with or without a primordial hydrogen envelope. In the mini-Neptune scenario, we find that all cases retain an envelope of at least 0.02 M$_\oplus$ fo…

Paleo-heat flux estimates across Enceladus derived from flexural response of the ice shell ↗

Saturn's moon Enceladus has active plumes suggestive of locally high heat fluxes at present, and the present-day heating is reasonably well characterized. However, the moon's thermal history is not well understood. In this study, we model flexural deformation of chasmata and dorsae in various regions of Enceladus to find the effective elastic thickness of the ice shell and constrain temporal and spatial variations in heat flux. We find paleo-heat fluxes of 60-$\geq$350 mWm$^{-2}$, with most clustered around 125-200 mWm$^{-2}$. Present day measured heat fluxes at the South Polar Terrain (SPT) a…

Chandra-JWST Probing the Effects of Moderate X-Ray Superflares on Protoplanetary Disks ↗

Powerful X-ray flares from young stars may rapidly alter the physical and chemical conditions of their planet-forming disks, but direct observational tests remain scarce. We present a Chandra-JWST/NIRSpec study of infrared spectral variability associated with pre-main-sequence (PMS) X-ray flares in the Orion Nebula. Combining six Chandra/ACIS-I observations with three NIRSpec-MOS visits, we analyze two-epoch spectra of 10 X-ray Flare stars and 12 matched non-flaring Controls among 84 observed disk-bearing PMS stars. We investigate three diagnostics: narrow 2.8-4.3 micron features, HI Br-alpha,…

NASA Names Astronaut Christina Koch Acting Deputy Chief Engineer ↗

NASA astronaut Christina Koch stands inside Kennedy Space Center’s Vehicle Assembly Building on July 14, 2021, in front of the agency’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket that ultimately powered the Orion spacecraft on the Artemis I mission. Koch later served as a crew member on the Artemis II mission in 2026, and on Oct. 13, 2026, NASA announced she will serve next as the agency’s acting deputy chief engineer. NASA/Glenn Benson NASA engineer and astronaut Christina Koch will serve as the agency’s acting deputy chief engineer beginning on Sunday, Nov. 1, following the retirement of Katherine Van…

Science-Driven Performance Requirements for UV Coronagraph Design: Implications for O$_3$ Detection in Earth-like Atmospheres ↗

Detecting biosignatures on Earth-like exoplanets from the Proterozoic era requires instrumentation capable of probing near-ultraviolet (NUV) spectral features, particularly ozone (\ce{O3}), which serves as an indirect proxy for molecular oxygen (\ce{O2}) when direct detection is challenging. Using a combination of photochemical-climate modeling and atmospheric retrieval simulations, we quantify fiducial instrument performance requirements for robust \ce{O3} detection and assess the risk of spectral false positives from sulfur dioxide (\ce{SO2}). Our analysis demonstrates the \ce{O3} abundances…

Thermodynamically consistent equation of state tables for use in giant planet and brown dwarf interior modeling ↗

Equation of state (EOS) tables used in giant planet modeling exhibit regions of strong thermodynamic inconsistency, or disobedience to the first law of thermodynamics. These generally result from smooth interpolation over physical discontinuities or between thermodynamic sub-domains governed by different physical models. The effect of thermodynamic inconsistency on structure models of planets evolved with these EOS has never been studied in detail, although it is understood to introduce spurious sources or sinks of energy or entropy in the models, leading to inaccuracies. Here, we present a me…

Simulations of the Evolving Ozone Layer: Implications for the Early Earth, Exoplanets, and the Search For Life ↗

Over 4 billion years, Earth's atmosphere has been transformed from a composition devoid of molecular oxygen (O$_2$) to one where O$_2$ is now 21% of our modern atmosphere by volume. With high quantities of O$_2$, an ozone (O$_3$) layer can form and partially shield the surface from biologically harmful ultraviolet radiation (UV). The evolution of the O$_3$ layer has previously been simulated under the modern Sun by independent groups with separate models. Here, we present simulations of Earth's atmosphere from four open-source one-dimensional (1D) photochemical models and a 3D chemistry-climat…

How to assess evidence about Space

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
