Earlier sources: Space

Space research and engineering study the universe and build the systems used to reach and observe it. Follow astronomy, spacecraft, launch systems, satellites, exploration, and Earth observation.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

539 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Testing the 4-Point Correlation Function as a Probe of Parity Violation with the Quijote-Odd Simulations ↗

We investigate parity violation searches with the 4-Point Correlation Function (4PCF) using the Quijote and Quijote-Odd halo catalogs. Specifically, we explore the auto- and cross-correlation searching methodologies that have been previously used in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) searches. Although the Quijote-Odd simulations are initialized with a parity-violating primordial trispectrum, we find no statistically detectable parity-odd signal in the halo 4PCF. Instead, we find that the halo measurements are dominated by Poi…

Establishing baseline model performances for optical turbulence forecasting ↗

Accurate forecasting of optical turbulence (OT) is useful to optimise telescope scheduling and maximising observing efficiency, as the performance of adaptive optics systems strongly depends on turbulence conditions. While various numerical weather prediction and machine learning models are developed to predict these complex turbulence properties, properly evaluating their added value requires well-defined baseline reference models. This study establishes baseline performance thresholds for key astroclimatic parameters using two distinct models: one forecasting the parameter average over a spe…

The ePESSTO+ census of ZTF nuclear transients. I. What flares in galactic nuclei? ↗

Transients in galactic nuclei arise from distinct processes, only some of which trace the supermassive black hole (SMBH). These include tidal disruption events (TDEs), changing-look active galactic nuclei, Bowen fluorescence flares (BFFs) and ambiguous nuclear transients, alongside supernovae that appear nuclear but are unrelated to the SMBH. Reliable classification requires spectroscopy, which will not scale to the alert volumes of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). We aim to characterise the population of nuclear transients, to identify early observables capable of distinguishing SM…

Star spots mimic the proposed abundance signatures of planet formation ↗

Trends with stellar elemental abundances and condensation temperature have been proposed as a possible tracer of rocky planet formation. Here we present an alternative explanation, where we show that stellar activity (star spots) can also cause apparent abundance changes in refractory elements preferentially over volatile elements. This effect arises naturally from atomic physics: refractory (rocky; high-$T_c$) elements preferentially have low first-ionization potentials, with strong transitions that are most sensitive to the cooler, magnetically-perturbed spot conditions, making any spot-indu…

TB 26-08 Complex Modes in Lightly Damped Structural Systems: A Two-Mode Interaction Perspective ↗

For more information, contact Joel W. Sills, Langley Research Center, joel.w.sills@nasa.gov Download the PDF version Complex mode shapes can emerge in a linear structure even when overall damping is low. This behavior can occur when two structural modes are closely spaced in frequency and are coupled through nonproportional damping. As the damping interaction increases, the two modal frequencies move toward one another while the mode shapes become increasingly complex. At a critical interaction level, the two frequencies coalesce. Beyond this point, the frequencies remain approximately equal w…

Ushering in high angular resolution observatories in the far-infrared: The case for a double-Fourier interferometer ↗

A far-infrared (far-IR) interferometer from a space-based platform would bring about a transformational improvement in the spatial detail of astronomical observations that are inaccessible from ground-based observatories. This orders-of-magnitude improvement would significantly advance studies of newly formed and mature exoplanetary systems and their potential for supporting life, the earliest stages of star formation, and the evolution of galaxies up to the peak of the Universe's star formation activity and beyond. In this work, we discuss the potential for such an instrument and the science…

Constraints on the cosmic reheating history from PTA data ↗

The cosmic reheating is an important epoch in the very early Universe, and has significant impacts on the primordial black hole (PBH) abundance and the scalar-induced gravitational wave (SIGW) spectrum. The relevant energy scale and the constituents of cosmic medium are encoded in the reheating frequency $f_{\mathrm{reh}}$ and the equation of state parameter $w$. In this work, we perform a full parameter space Bayesian inference, using the NANOGrav 15-yr dataset to constrain the thermal history of reheating. Treating $f_{\mathrm{reh}}$ and $w$ as free parameters, we systematically investigate…

Orbital Angular Momentum Transfer and Beam-Quality Limits in Fork-Grating Electron Diffraction ↗

We analyze fork-grating generation of electron vortex beams beyond the ideal single-mode approximation. The incident beam is described as a paraxial Gaussian ensemble with finite transverse momentum spread and a first electromagnetic Hartree phase accumulated before the grating. Within Fresnel propagation we derive an analytical expression for each diffraction order and determine the corresponding orbital-angular-momentum statistics. The mean OAM of a selected order remains fixed by the topological rule, $\langle L_z\rangle_m=mp\hbar$, while its variance is set by the residual transverse momen…

Reconstruction of Interstellar Cosmic Ray Anisotropy via Heliospheric Propagation Modeling and SVD Inversion ↗

Ground-based experiments such as the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov Gamma-Ray Observatory detect cosmic-ray anisotropy on Earth, but magnetic deflections within the heliosphere complicate interpretation. Understanding the original spatial distribution of cosmic rays in the interstellar medium requires modeling particle propagation across the heliospheric boundary. We constructed a simulated transport model that backtracks antiprotons from Earth to the interstellar medium and maps spatial transfer probabilities across energies using HEALPix representations. B…

How to assess evidence about Space

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
