Earlier sources: Space
Space research and engineering study the universe and build the systems used to reach and observe it. Follow astronomy, spacecraft, launch systems, satellites, exploration, and Earth observation.
SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.
Open in the map ↗517 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.
Earlier sources
Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Bayesian power spectrum estimation with modelling of systematic effects in delay-fringe rate space ↗
Abstract Observing the Epoch of Reionisation using 21cm radio interferometry has proven to be a challenging task. Extraction of the extremely faint redshifted signal is complicated by the presence of bright foregrounds, radio frequency interference (RFI), and systematic artefacts. We discuss the challenge of accounting for systematic effects, particularly cable reflections, that appear in the visibility data obtained from 21cm interferometers. Cable reflections cause attenuated copies of the foreground signal to appear outside the ‘foreground wedge’ region in which foreground contamination is…

Phlegethon: a fully compressible magnetohydrodynamic code for simulations in stellar astrophysics ↗
We present PHLEGETHON, a fully compressible, Eulerian magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code designed for multidimensional simulations in stellar astrophysics. The code uses a time-explicit, second-order, finite-volume method optimized to model a wide range of dynamical processes in stars, from very low-Mach-number turbulent convection in the cores of massive stars to supersonic flows in subsurface convection zones. PHLEGETHON employs low-dissipation Riemann solvers and a well-balanced method to accurately capture slow flows arising from strongly stratified media. The induction equation is solved usin…

Weyl-Transition-Driven Giant Reversible Orbital Hall Conductivity ↗
Abstract The orbital Hall conductivity (OHC) is central to orbitronics, yet its microscopic control remains largely unexplored. Here we identify a general mechanism in which tilted Weyl crossings formed by orbitally distinct bands generate a strongly asymmetric orbital Berry curvature (OBC) distribution, whose imbalance survives Brillouin-zone integration and yields a sizable OHC already at zeroth order. Using first-principles calculations, we show that monolayer PtBi2 realizes this mechanism and hosts a giant OHC dominated by a type-II Weyl point. A small biaxial tensile strain drives a type-…

October’s Night Sky Notes: Spooky Stargazing ↗
2 Min Read October’s Night Sky Notes: Spooky Stargazing This infrared image from NASA’s Spitzer Space telescope shows a cloud of gas and dust carved out by a massive star. A drawing overlaid on the image reveals why researchers nicknamed this region the “Jack-o’-lantern Nebula.” Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech The Ghoul Located within the constellation Perseus lies a star called Algol, also known as ‘Demon Star’ or ‘The Ghoul’. You can spot this star during the autumn months, along with Cassiopeia and Andromeda in the northeastern sky, beginning after 9 PM. In Greek mytholog…

Whole-disk Photometric and Colorimetric Phase Curves of Earth with the Clementine Lunar Orbiter ↗
The phase curve on a planetary object can reveal key details about its atmosphere and surface, including the presence of surface liquid oceans. Phase curves for Earth can inform the search for habitable surface environments on terrestrial exoplanets, but such phase curves are quite rare. The Clementine lunar orbiter made 3,744 observations of the Earth between February and May of 1994. These observations spanned phase angles between 3.4 and 139.1 degrees. From these data, we produce phase curves of Earth in 5 distinct bands with wavelengths between 400 nm and 1000 nm. We extrapolate fits to th…

Cool, Cloudy Nights on an Ultrahot Neptune: A Panchromatic NIRISS/NIRSpec Transmission Spectrum of LTT 9779 b ↗
Studies of planets that reside in the hot Neptune desert allow us to gain insight into how their atmospheres survive the intense flux from their host stars. One such member of that population, LTT 9779 b, is unique in that it has a confirmed atmosphere across various multi-wavelength studies, although results regarding the planet's atmospheric content differ. We present a panchromatic ($λ= 0.63 - 5.165$ $μ$m) JWST transmission spectrum of LTT 9779 b's atmosphere, including a re-reduction of previously obtained NIRISS/SOSS data and a reduction of recent NIRSpec/G395H data. Through atmospheric r…

PHAROS: Panchromatic spectral energy distributions of solar-like stars across evolutionary stages ↗
Panchromatic stellar spectral energy distributions (SEDs) provide the wavelength-dependent irradiation fields required for studies of exoplanet atmospheres, photochemistry, atmospheric escape, and habitability. We present PHAROS, the Panchromatic Habitable-world Archive of Radiation from Observed Solar-like stars, a first release of fifteen component-traceable SEDs for nearby FGK stars spanning adopted ages of 0.26--6.5\,Gyr. The catalogue covers 0.5--5000\,nm and combines archival \textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{Chandra} high-energy constraints, semiempirical extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) reconst…

NASA, Boeing Share Update on Commercial Starliner Development Plans ↗
Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft that launched NASA’s Crew Flight Test astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to the International Space Station is pictured docked to the Harmony module’s forward port. This long-duration photograph was taken on July 3, 2024, from the orbital complex as it soared 256 miles above the Arabian Sea off the coast of Mumbai, India. Credit: NASA On Monday, NASA and Boeing provided an update on the company’s Starliner spacecraft, including adding additional crew missions and certifying a new rocket for crew transportation to low Earth orbit. “We are living through the…

NASA Armstrong Celebrates 80 Years of Flight Innovation ↗
On Sept. 30, 1946, five National Advisory Committee of Aeronautics (NACA) engineers arrived at Muroc Army Airfield in California’s high desert to achieve supersonic flight for the first time. In less than two years, NACA flew the X-1 aircraft faster than the speed of sound, marking an important milestone in aviation history. Fast forward 80 years, and that former NACA outpost is now NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, flying the X-59 supersonic X-plane in the same skies to demonstrate that supersonic flight doesn’t have to come with a boom. Over Armstrong’s 80-year…

How to assess evidence about Space
Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
