Earlier sources: Space

Space research and engineering study the universe and build the systems used to reach and observe it. Follow astronomy, spacecraft, launch systems, satellites, exploration, and Earth observation.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

530 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: rising. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

    Juice-SWI during the Lunar-Earth-Gravity-Assist (LEGA) - Part 2: Instrument operations ↗

The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) embarked in 2023 on a 8-year interplanetary journey to Jupiter and its icy moons. The Submillimetre Wave Instrument (SWI) is one of the ten science instruments aboard the spacecraft. SWI is a sophisticated and first-of-its-kind payload visiting the outer solar system, featuring dual-band tunable receivers, two independent pointing mechanisms, and spectrometers capable of high resolution (up to a resolving power of 10^{7}). It is designed to support the diverse science objectives of the Juice mission targeting Jupiter's middle atmosphere, icy-moon's exosph…

Europa smooth plains formation: a SPH cryovolcanic model ↗

Cryovolcanism is a fundamental geodynamical process that has been observed on several icy moons. Europa stands out as a primary target for investigating potential cryovolcanic activity and its role in shaping icy moon surfaces. This work characterizes the physical state of ascending cryomagma and evaluates the relevance of terrestrial analogues to explain Europa's surface features. After investigating cryomagma depressurization, we developed CryoPy, a numerical model based on Smoothed-Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) for computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer. We simulated flow propagation…

Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices in the Martian +E hemisphere downstream of crustal magnetic anomalies ↗

At unmagnetized planetary bodies, the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability at the solar-wind boundary is a key driver of atmospheric escape, fundamentally shaping long-term climate evolution. This shear-driven plasma mixing is theoretically predicted to be asymmetric, strongly favoring the hemisphere where the solar-wind electric field points toward the planet (-E hemisphere). Here we report the observation of a coherent train of fully developed KH vortices in the traditionally unfavorable +E hemisphere of Mars, using in-situ MAVEN measurements. Contemporaneous upstream constraints from Tianwen-1…

Dynamical Behavior and Surface Features of Large Super-Fast Rotator Near-Earth Asteroid (436724) 2011 UW158 ↗

The sub-kilometer Super-Fast Rotator and Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (436724) 2011 UW158 exhibits an extreme dynamical environment driven by its rotational period of 0.61072 h. Using a 3-D polyhedral shape model, we investigate the surface dynamic stability under both cohesionless and cohesion-modified conditions, while also addressing families of periodic orbits, station-keeping maneuvers, and energy states in this rapidly rotating, irregular-body regime. Our results show that, with the inclusion of cohesion, the effective slopes decrease to ~45°, permitting the retention of boulders with…

The Dynamical Environment of Kepler-223 Planetary System ↗

The Kepler space telescope was a successful mission that used the transit method. Multi-planetary systems are interesting because they are dynamically rich due to the planets' interactions. Kepler's mission was the first to find a system with four planets all in resonance, that is Kepler-223. The Kepler-223 system is of unique dynamical interest as the first exoplanetary system confirmed to host four sub-Neptune planets in a precise 3:4:6:8 resonant chain. Previous dynamical studies have struggled to fully recover the long-term phase protection mechanisms, often finding that higher-order reson…

Efficient field-free magnetization switching through orbital-current-enhanced magnon torque ↗

Efficient control of magnetization is essential for the development of spintronics devices. Various mechanisms, including spin currents, orbital currents, and magnon currents, have been explored to achieve magnetization switching. Among them, magnon currents facilitate low-dissipation transport of spin angular momentum, potentially mitigating energy dissipation associated with Ohmic loss. So far, the magnon currents excited by spin currents have been well-established, while the role of orbital currents in magnon excitation remains much less explored. Here, we report efficient magnon torques in…

European autonomy, competitiveness and security in the new space era ↗

Europe is lagging behind the US and China in the new space era. Accounting for only 11% of the global institutional space budget, Europe must transition from fragmented, slow-moving institutional programmes to a highly coordinated, pragmatic strategy that balances strategic sovereignty with operational realism. This article outlines how Europe can boost its autonomy, macroeconomic competitiveness and national security in space. First, Europe must develop sovereign, reusable heavy-lift launch capabilities while streamlining procurement for innovative small and medium-sized enterprises. Second,…

Deterministic Enforcement of Orbit-Derived Maintenance Exclusion Windows for Vulnerability Remediation in a Simulated Satellite Ground Segment ↗

Satellite ground segments run conventional, patchable software, but disruptive maintenance must be coordinated with recurring orbital visibility. We formulate vulnerability remediation as a constrained action-and-timing problem in which SGP4-propagated visibility intervals and a pre-contact guard band define protected intervals, and a deterministic gate admits or rejects each action over a recovery-aware execution envelope containing the action, its verification, and any rollback. The enforcement property is stated as a proved conditional invariant, and the experiments test conformance to it r…

Numerical Assessment of the Laser Shock Analogy for Hypervelocity Impacts on Composite and Hybrid Spacecraft Shielding ↗

This study numerically investigates the analogy between laser shock (LS) and projectile-based hypervelocity impact (HVI) for composite and hybrid spacecraft shielding materials and proposes a methodology for determining the LS parameters corresponding to a given HVI event. Numerical HVI models were developed in LS-DYNA and validated against published experimental data for two shielding configurations: (a) a CFRP bumper and (b) an Al/CFRP/Al/CFRP/Al hybrid shield, with emphasis on crater formation and damage morphology. An LS model was subsequently calibrated through iterative adjustment of the…

Urban building change detection with satellite imagery: a temporospatial attention Siamese SNUNet-ECAM framework ↗

Abstract Urban building change monitoring on bi-temporal Very High Resolution (VHR) satellite imagery is critical for land-use monitoring, post-disaster assessment, and urban planning. We use LEVIR-CD, a public benchmark of 637 bi-temporal 1024 $$\times$$ 1024-pixel image pairs at 0.5 m/pixel resolution, collected from Google Earth imagery of 20 regions in Texas, USA, with a 5–14-year interval between acquisitions and a $$\sim$$ 4.6% building-change pixel ratio. Rather than proposing a new architectural module, this paper presents a systematic integration of a Siamese ResNet50 encoder, the Tem…

How to assess evidence about Space

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
