Earlier sources: Space

Space research and engineering study the universe and build the systems used to reach and observe it. Follow astronomy, spacecraft, launch systems, satellites, exploration, and Earth observation.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

528 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: rising. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

High-resolution optical spectroscopy reveals the distinctive volatile composition of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS ↗

Comets preserve volatile material from the early stages of planetary-system formation. The discovery of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS enables a direct comparison between a comet formed around another star and comets in the Solar System. We characterise the coma composition of 3I/ATLAS across perihelion using homogeneous high-resolution near-UV and optical spectroscopy with UVES on the ESO Very Large Telescope, from August 2025 (r$_h$=3.14 au) pre-perihelion to February 2026 (r$_h$=4.34 au) post-perihelion. From flux-calibrated spectra, we measured OH, NH, CN, C$_3$, CH and C$_2$ emissions, d…

NGTS clusters survey - VII. An Enigmatic Short-Period Circumsecondary Disk Candidate in Orion ↗

Young stellar systems provide key insights into the processes governing star/planet formation, often exhibiting complex and evolving photometric variability. In this paper, we present an analysis of the object around NOI 105872, observed by the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) to eclipse a young ($4.1\pm0.4$ Myr) M-type star in the Orion Nebula Cluster. The system displays deep, asymmetric eclipses with a period of $\sim0.69$ days, alongside variability in morphology. We combine photometric observations spanning approximately a decade from multiple ground- and space-based facilities to in…

Molecules in the shadows of the protoplanetary disk HD 143006: Evidence for C/O $\gtrsim 1$ from simultaneously modeling fourteen ALMA lines ↗

The inner disk of the T Tauri star HD 143006 is inclined and casts a broad shadow on a large portion of the outer disk. We use this extraordinary geometry to study the impact of stellar ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on disk chemistry, temperature, and line formation. We present new ALMA observations of this disk in CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, CN, HCN, HCO$^+$, CS and C$_3$H$_2$ and combine these with previously-published data to get a rich dataset, which is modeled with ProDiMo models for the illuminated and shadowed side by including an optional inclined inner disk to partially block stellar ill…

Transport and Thermochemical Kinetics of Alkali Species in Hot Jupiter Atmospheres: Implications for Magnetic Models ↗

Interactions between the planetary magnetic field of a hot Jupiter and the winds within its atmosphere are moderated by the electron and ion abundances. For a solar metallicity atmosphere at pressures between 10 and $10^{-4}$ bar, the primary sources for these charged species are expected to be the potassium and sodium atoms, and models of magnetic effects in hot Jupiter atmospheres have typically assumed that charged species exist within the atmosphere in their equilibrium abundances. In this work, we investigate the thermochemical kinetics of alkali species within a hot Jupiter atmosphere, t…

Molecular mapping of an exoplanet with JWST: NH3 detection in the temperate super-Jupiter Epsilon Indi Ab ↗

Epsilon Indi Ab is currently the coldest, and one of the closest, directly imaged exoplanets (T_eff = 275 K, d=3.6 pc), offering a unique opportunity to test our understanding of the physical and chemical properties of gas giants across the full temperature range spanned by hotter directly imaged exoplanets and the cooler giants of the Solar System. We aim to characterize the atmosphere of Epsilon Indi Ab using infrared spectroscopic observations. We present JWST spectroscopic observations of Epsilon Indi Ab obtained with MIRI in the Medium Resolution Spectrograph mode (4.9-27.9 microns, Octob…

Fitting Moving Objects in Up-The-Ramp Data with Applications to the Roman Space Telescope and JWST ↗

A moving object breaks the fundamental property of constant per-pixel count rates in an astronomical image read out up-the-ramp. In this paper, we show how to fit a moving object's path across a detector as that detector is read out nondestructively. We write the full likelihood function for every pixel subject to a constant count rate plus a time-dependent count rate due to a moving source. Assuming the moving source to be point-like and assuming the effective point-spread function to be known, we are left with four parameters that enter the likelihood nonlinearly: two for position and two fo…

Simulation of Perturbed Motion of a Very Low Earth Orbit Spacecraft with a Corrective Variable-Magnitude Thrust Electric Propulsion System ↗

This paper presents an approach to modeling the perturbed motion of a low-orbit spacecraft equipped with a corrective electric propulsion system operating in adaptive thrust control modes. The approach is based on a specified criterion for maintaining an ultra-low orbit while taking into account the existing operational time constraints. The proposed mathematical models are intended for numerical calculations and can be applied in design analysis tasks, particularly when the mass–dimensional and energy characteristics of an ultra-low-orbit spacecraft and its electric propulsion system are to b…

In-Band RCS Reduction of Circularly Polarized Antenna Array with High Aperture Efficiency and Low Profile for Satellite and Navigation Systems ↗

This paper proposes a circularly polarized (CP) antenna array featuring high aperture efficiency, a low in-band radar cross section (RCS), and a low profile. First, two different patch antenna elements are designed, which exhibit desirable CP performance and a 180° reflection phase difference under x-polarized normal incidence within the same operation band. These elements are then arranged in a chessboard configuration to simultaneously achieve high aperture efficiency and in-band RCS reduction under x-polarized normal incidence. Subsequently, the parasitic units are uniformly embedded into t…

    Period-Inverted Blast-Radius Normalization for a Non-Ablating Hypersonic Reentry Source Using OSIRIS-REx Capsule Infrasound ↗

Cylindrical blast wave theory relates infrasound from hypersonic sources to energy deposition through a characteristic blast radius R_0, yet the normalization constant k in the scaling R_0 = k (E_0/p_0)^(1/2) differs by up to 40% across the formulations examined here. This uncertainty affects period-based source characterization for elevated atmospheric sources relevant to infrasound monitoring. Using infrasound from the OSIRIS-REx Sample Return Capsule reentry on 24 September 2023, observed periods at 39 stations spanning source altitudes of 44-62 km are inverted through a weak-shock propagat…

How to assess evidence about Space

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
