Earlier sources: Satellites

This space thread follows satellites through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

41 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Faint Diffuse 557.7‐nm Emissions Equatorward of the Auroral Oval: Conjugate Observations by Ground Airglow Imagers and the Arase Satellite ↗

Abstract At subauroral latitudes, discrete auroras, such as strong thermal emission velocity enhancement and stable auroral red arcs, have been extensively studied. On the other hand, diffuse emissions at subauroral latitudes have not been studied well. In this paper, we report eight events of conjugate observations of faint diffuse 557.7‐nm emissions with intensities of 300–1,000 rayleighs without discrete structures equatorward of the auroral oval, using the Arase satellite and high‐sensitivity all‐sky airglow imagers in North America. Ground‐magnetosphere conjugate observations of such diff…

In-Flight Aircraft Detection in Satellite Videos: A Benchmark Dataset and Temporal Snake Mixing Network ↗

Satellite videos provide dynamic observations over large areas, offering an important means for in-flight aircraft monitoring. However, due to the wide operational range of aircraft and limited observation windows, real data acquisition is difficult, and related studies remain scarce. Since the small scale of aircraft targets limits the information available in individual frames, existing methods for small moving object detection typically rely on multiframe fusion to enhance detection. However, background variations in satellite videos can disrupt temporal correspondences, affecting the extra…

Satellite-based vessel detection under turbulence and jitter: a degradation-aware comparison ↗

Maritime domain awareness increasingly relies on satellite-based Earth observation (EO) for wide-area vessel monitoring. Low Earth orbit (LEO) platforms enable flexible acquisition, but optical imagery can be degraded by atmospheric turbulence and platform jitter. This paper presents a degradation-aware evaluation of deep learning-based maritime vessel detection that links algorithmic performance to the physical constraints of spaceborne optical imaging. Using real optical satellite imagery and physically motivated synthetic turbulence and jitter models, we compare YOLOv8, YOLOv11, RetinaNet,…

VESTA: In-Vehicle Sensing with GNSS Satellite Signals ↗

Vehicles have become an indispensable part of modern life. Over the past decade, perception systems such as radar and LiDAR have become increasingly popular for out-vehicle sensing. In contrast, comparatively little attention has been paid to in-vehicle sensing. While camera-based solutions raise privacy concerns, wireless sensing-based approaches typically require dedicated transmitters, increasing deployment costs and potentially interfering with existing wireless communications. In this paper, we propose VESTA, an in-vehicle sensing system that leverages the ubiquity of GNSS signals. The ub…

A Low-Phase-Noise InGaAs/GaAs BiHEMT Balanced Colpitts VCO with Deep-Learning-Optimized On-Chip Inductor for Satellite Communication Applications ↗

In this communication, a balanced Colpitts VCO with low phase noise and a wide tuning range is presented, which was implemented using a 2 μm GaAs BiHEMT process. To improve phase noise, a noise-shifting technique introduced by the cross-coupled pair was applied. A deep-learning-assisted genetic algorithm was employed to optimize the quality factor of an on-chip inductor, further improving the phase noise. Additionally, three-bit switches were utilized to expand the tuning range of this VCO. Finally, a VCO prototype was implemented and fabricated for verification. The measurement results demons…

Cropland PAtteRNS: Parallel Dimensional Attention Networks and Attention to Dataset Disparity for Crop Segmentation in Satellite Imagery Time Series Data ↗

The landscape of satellite imagery time series datasets and boundary-pushing architectures for cropland segmentation has never been richer. However, in this gold rush, important truths are being missed on both fronts, as a drive for the most novel concepts or the largest datasets pushes finer details to the side. In this paper, we present our hybrid transformer-convolutional model, Cropland Parallel Attention and Refinement Network for Segmentation (PAtteRNS), the first model to use self-attention mechanisms separately for each of the temporal, spectral, and spatial aspects of Sentinel-2 multi…

Independent Verification Paths Are Not Independent: A Case Study of Common-Mode Failure in a Satellite Catalogue Pipeline ↗

A common safeguard for a data pipeline is redundant computation: derive each published number by two routes built on different technology and refuse to exit when they disagree. We report one such gate failing, in a cross-catalogue integrity study of two open registers of Earth-orbiting objects. A gate comparing a set-based Python path with SPARQL queries over the emitted RDF graph printed ALL CROSS-CHECKS AGREE on seven counts. Three were wrong, one overstated more than fourfold (932 against 220). Both paths imported the same constants, which encoded a misreading of the source's status vocabul…

How to assess evidence about Satellites

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
