Earlier sources: Astronomy

This space thread follows astronomy through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

263 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Planet formation on solar system scales ↗

Giant planets are often regarded as primordial protoplanetary "architects". Their formation and interactions with planetesimals and other planets during and after the protoplanetary disc phase are key to setting the blueprint of the planetary systems we observe today. Catching nascent gas giants is our best opportunity to uncover these crucial steps in the planet formation process and shed light on the origins of our own solar system. Over the last decade, ALMA has revolutionised our understanding of planet formation; still, detecting signatures of Jupiter-like planets has remained out of reac…

Evolved stars, multiplicity and planets: Shaping and Being Shaped by Stellar Evolution ↗

Understanding how planets and stellar companions survive and interact with their host stars as they evolve, or are ultimately destroyed in the process, is essential both for predicting the long-term future of planetary systems like our own and the contribution of stars to galactic chemical evolution. In this white paper, we discuss how the next generation ALMA (ALMA2040) will revolutionize our understanding of the key processes by detecting and characterising accreting companions and planetary engulfment signatures in hundreds of systems with evolved stars.

WALTzER: Wide-band Atmospheric Laboratory for Transiting Exoplanet Research ↗

Understanding the origin and evolution of planetary atmospheres, and the connection between their lower and upper atmospheric layers, remains a fundamental challenge in exoplanet science. Addressing these questions requires observations spanning a broad wavelength range, from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared, together with the ability to simultaneously characterise planetary and stellar variability. The Wide-band Atmospheric Laboratory for Transiting Exoplanet Research (WALTzER) is an ESA F3 mission candidate designed to address this need through simultaneous low-resolution spectroscopy an…

    A first look at the protoplanet WISPIT 2 b with VLTI/GRAVITY+ ↗

Confirmed observations of young protoplanets actively undergoing the process of formation have remained rare to date. In this Letter, we present new insights into the nature of the recently identified protoplanet WISPIT 2 b (age $\sim$ 5 Myr) from VLTI/GRAVITY+ observations. Through the analysis of the spectral energy distribution (SED) and astrometry of WISPIT 2 b, with the inclusion of new GRAVITY+ data, we investigate the nature of the protoplanet's thermal emission and orbital properties. We performed an orbit fit with the inclusion of new high-precision GRAVITY+ astrometry to provide an u…

An HST survey of photometry and multiplicity of brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects in the field of Taurus ↗

We present a photometric and multiplicity survey of 26 young objects with masses between 6 Mj and 37 Mj and spectral type later than M8 in the Taurus star-forming region with the Hubble Space Telescope. We search for companion candidates using two methods: a dedicated photometric technique based on the combination of colours from multi-band photometry and point spread function fitting. No companion candidates are detected beyond 30 au. With an updated membership and age identification, we determine luminosity, temperature, and mass for the 26 young objects using evolutionary models. We demonst…

Thermodynamics of Viscously Heated Circumplanetary Disks ↗

Circumplanetary disks (CPDs) play an important role in the formation of gas giants and their satellites, yet remain poorly understood owing to the lack of observables and comprehensive theoretical models. Incorporating $α$-viscosity, a free-fall prescription of mass infall and boundary layer accretion, we develop an axisymmetric viscous radiation hydrodynamic (RHD) model. We evolve this model for different physical parameters using the RHD code {\tt Guangqi}, which solves RHD equations under the flux-limited diffusion approximation. In eight out of nine simulations, we obtain quasi-steady-stat…

    Post-perihelion dust activity and a candidate icy-grain halo in long-period comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan--ATLAS) ↗

We analyze the post-perihelion coma of the Great Comet of 2024, C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan--ATLAS) to characterize dust activity and assess the contribution of sublimating icy grains to a candidate near-nucleus halo. Using archival Zwicky Transient Facility images from 15 February to 26 May 2025, we performed aperture photometry within a fixed projected radius of 40,000 km and derived azimuthally averaged surface-brightness profiles. The comet faded from 12.86 to 14.77 mag as heliocentric distance increased from 2.64 to 3.90 au, with two short-lived brightenings. The effective dust cross section d…

Dust Activity Evolution and Constraints on Icy Grains in the Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS ↗

We present Zwicky Transient Facility observations of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS to characterize its dust-activity evolution before and after perihelion. Before perihelion, the effective scattering cross section $C_{\rm e}$ brightened across the inner $2\times10^4$ km as $C_{\rm e}\propto r_{\rm H}^{-γ}$, with $γ$ increasing from $1.63\pm0.14$ to $1.88\pm0.34$ with aperture size. After perihelion, the heliocentric index decreased from $2.44\pm0.09$ in the $5\times10^3$ km aperture to $1.54\pm0.09$ in the $8\times10^4$ km aperture, indicating faster fading of the inner coma. Under adopted g…

Orbital Stability of Apsidally Aligned Planetary Systems ↗

The dynamical stability of compact planetary systems is known to depend strongly on orbital eccentricities, but the physical role of apsidal alignment remains poorly understood. We investigate this problem using direct {\em N}-body simulations by separating planetary eccentricities into a systematic component shared by all planets and a random component that determines the degree of apsidal alignment. We find that these two components play fundamentally different dynamical roles. Random eccentricity destabilizes planetary systems by driving neighboring planet pairs into the regime of mean-moti…

Cosmological inference with halo clustering reconstructed from the redshift-space galaxy distribution ↗

Accurate modeling of small-scale redshift-space clustering is crucial for full shape RSD analyses, where satellite galaxies contribute to 1-halo terms and Finger-of-God distortions. We investigate halo reconstruction based on the cylinder grouping (CG) method of Okumura et al. (2017), which selects an effective halo center tracer from the observed galaxy distribution, and how it impacts cosmological parameter inference. Using DESI-like luminous red galaxy mock catalogs from the AbacusSummit simulations at $z=1.1$, we perform effective field theory (EFT)-based full-shape modeling of the power s…

How to assess evidence about Astronomy

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
