Earlier sources: Astronomy

This space thread follows astronomy through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

257 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

The GAPS Programme at TNG. LXXX. Characterisation of the 400 Myr old multi-planet system K2-233 ↗

Understanding exoplanet physical properties is crucial for characterising their atmospheres and internal composition. Precise planetary masses are essential for constraining bulk densities and interiors, particularly in young systems hosting planets within or near the radius valley, where atmospheric mass loss may strongly shape their evolution. Here we revise the masses of the three transiting planets orbiting K2-233, a young ($\sim 400$ Myr) active K-type star. We combine 70 HARPS-N observations from the GAPS/ArMS Large Programme with 124 archival HARPS observations, K2 light curves, and TES…

A faint dust ring beyond the compact disk of Sz 76 ↗

We report new ALMA Band 7 high-resolution ($\sim$0.05$^{''}$) continuum and $^{12}\text{CO}\ (J=3\text{--}2)$ observations of the disk around the young low-mass star Sz 76. Visibility-plane modeling reveals a previously undetected, faint outer dust ring centered at $\sim$45 au surrounding the compact central disk. Including this low-surface-brightness feature increases the characteristic dust radius from $R_{\text{dust,68}} \approx 7$ au to $41$ au. Combined with an outer gas extent of $R_{\text{CO,68}} \approx 77$ au, the resulting gas-to-dust size ratio decreases from an extreme value of $\s…

    A Jupiter-like radio aurora in the L3.5 dwarf LSPM J0036+1821 ↗

Ultracool dwarfs exhibit radio emission revealing strong magnetic fields and complex magnetospheric processes. Their auroral emission resembles that observed in magnetized Solar System planets, providing a framework to investigate their magnetic topology. We aim to characterize the magnetic activity, rotation, and atmospheric variability of the L3.5 dwarf LSPM J0036+1821 through a multiwavelength analysis. We conducted a long-term monitoring campaign combining radio observations from the Very Large Array and very long baseline interferometry arrays with TESS optical photometry, spanning 2019-2…

Cosmic Birefringence from Large Lepton Asymmetry ↗

Cosmic birefringence, the rotation of the polarization plane of CMB photons, provides an intriguing probe of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we investigate a vector Chern-Simons coupling between the neutrino current and photons as a possible origin of isotropic cosmic birefringence. Firstly, we perform the first analysis of anisotropic cosmic birefringence induced by the neutrino current. We find that the anisotropic signal sourced by lepton-number isocurvature fluctuations can be important on large scales, whereas on small scales, the anisotropic signal induced by gravitatio…

A Deep Learning Approach to Improving the Arrival-Direction Accuracy of Gamma-Ray Air-Shower Measurements with the Tibet-III Air-Shower Array ↗

The Tibet AS$γ$ experiment observes cosmic gamma rays from several teraelectron volts to the petaelectron volt range using an array of ground-based surface air-shower detectors (Tibet-III), which is composed of plastic scintillators. The arrival direction is conventionally reconstructed by fitting the shower front to detector hit-timing data, and the resulting angular resolution is approximately 0.5$^\circ$ to 0.2$^\circ$ in the energy range from 10 to 100 TeV. In this study, to further improve the directional reconstruction accuracy, we developed a new arrival-direction reconstruction method…

A comparison between particle and fluid approaches for streaming instability in global patch simulations ↗

Identifying the process relevant to planet formation is still a major task. Mechanisms have been identified that can trap dust, preventing it from migrating inwards. A particular hydrodynamic instability, known as the streaming instability, is of high interest because it may be responsible for the formation of dust clumps from which the first planetesimals form. We aim to compare the outcome of non-linear streaming instability simulations using both fundamental approaches in a more realistic global disk model. The results will not be used to identify or disentangle the effect of, e.g., numeric…

The Fast Transient Foreground Fog of LSST ↗

Studies with 1-m class telescopes have now established that glints from satellites and space debris are the main obstacles to searches for sub-minute optical transients. Here, we report a study of this foreground using observations from the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) with the Simonyi 8.4-m telescope at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. From 2,955 pairs of consecutive 30-s exposures, spanning 4,755 deg$^2$ of unique sky area and an area-time coverage of 472 deg$^2$ hr, we identified a population of faint, PSF-like, sub-minute events, including isolated events with no linear sequences o…

Constrained Diffusion for Data-Scarce Orbital Monte Carlo in Constellation Tasking ↗

Constellation Monte Carlo results depend on the orbital population used to evaluate a tasking policy. With scarce reference trajectories, replay limits geometric diversity, while independent orbital-element jitter can violate physical constraints. We study constrained diffusion for orbital-population augmentation. A force-conditioned diffusion model learns a 13-dimensional orbital prior, recovering semimajor axis from perigee altitude and eccentricity; Basilisk propagates each sample under one of five force-model tiers. Using 800 reference trajectories, we compare diffusion with jittered boots…

Dual is different: EFTs, axions and nonpropagating form fields in cosmology ↗

A bstract Scalar fields in 4D are known to have equivalent dual descriptions in terms of form-field gauge potentials, but this is often regarded as an arcane fact. Why use more complicated formulations when simpler scalar descriptions exist and are equivalent? We describe three ways in which scalars that arise as duals can differ from their garden-variety counterparts. Two of these — the interchange of weak and strong couplings and utility in bringing topological information to the low-energy theory — are relatively well-known, but to these we add a third: dualities that map derivative interac…

Detection of escaping magnesium in the upper atmosphere of WASP-76b ↗

Near-ultraviolet (NUV) observations can uniquely probe low-density, high-altitude gas in ultra-hot Jupiters (UHJs) via strong resonance lines of metals. WASP-76b is a well-studied UHJ with prior detections of refractory metals and complex day-night chemistry, making it a prime target for atmospheric escape diagnostics in the NUV. We present HST/STIS E230M (2274 - 3119 $\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$) transmission spectroscopy of WASP-76b. While broad- (~ 200 $\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$) and narrow-band (4 $\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$) transmission spectra do not show spectral features, a velocity-resolved sing…

How to assess evidence about Astronomy

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
