Earlier sources: Astronomy

This space thread follows astronomy through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

241 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

LoFreq-SETI: A Low-Frequency Technosignature Search Pipeline for the LWA Swarm ↗

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) is conducted across the electromagnetic spectrum to understand the prevalence and distribution of intelligent life in the universe. At radio frequencies, this effort focuses on searching for "technosignatures", observable indicators of technological activity consistent with our understanding of an advanced civilization. Historically, the microwave regime from 1-10 GHz has been the primary frequency range searched for these technosignatures, but recent SETI experiments utilizing low-frequency radio telescopes, such as the Low Frequency Array (…

A forest of emission lines observed by Sunrise III/SUSI above the solar limb ↗

We present off-limb spectroscopy using low-straylight data from the Sunrise Spectropolarimeter and Imager (SUSI) onboard the Sunrise III stratospheric solar observatory. A spatial scan with SUSI's slit almost parallel to the local limb reached from within the solar disc to 6.5 Mm off-limb. The wavelength range spanned from 407.6 to 410.25 nm. We detected a total of 174 spectral lines in emission off-limb, a 2.5-fold increase over previous reports. Surprisingly, 122 of these lines begin to appear in emission already on the disc, although close to the limb. In addition, one-fifth of relatively p…

Closing the Gap: A Test of the Streaming Instability Using Simulations and Observations of the Cold-Classical Kuiper Belt Size Distribution ↗

How planetesimals form is a major open question in studies of planet formation, as the growth of smaller solids must overcome barriers such as radial drift, fragmentation, and bouncing. The leading model is that planetesimals form by the gravitational collapse of dense particle clumps that have been aerodynamically collected via a process known as the streaming instability (SI). While the SI has passed several observational tests, a critical test remains: a successful comparison with the size distribution of Solar System planetesimals. In this work, we conducted a series of SI simulations for…

AEGIS: Differentiable Mars Climate Model with Neural Closures ↗

General circulation models (GCMs) are the primary tool for simulating planetary atmospheres. They play a vital role in understanding Mars's atmosphere, as forecasting its unique weather is mission-critical for operations such as entry, descent, and landing. Mars poses unusual challenges for these models, as observations are sparse compared to Earth. In addition, a thin \co{} atmosphere alongside a radiatively active dust cycle creates a volatile atmosphere with large diurnal temperature swings and no true terrestrial analog for validation. Existing Mars GCMs, including the LMD PCM, the NASA Am…

Measuring the Age and Initial Composition of Interstellar Objects ↗

Measuring the age and composition of interstellar objects is necessary to understand their origins. However, existing methods for measuring the age are either imprecise or require an unusually bright target, while the composition is confounded by the effects of Galactic cosmic rays, which drive chemical reactions in the cometary matrix. As the Vera C. Rubin Observatory expands the census of interstellar objects, measuring these properties will be critical to understanding the overall population. In this work, I derive a new methodology for simultaneously estimating the age and initial composit…

The Nearest, Brightest Debris Disk Host Stars: Updated Photosphere Models and Dust Properties for Stars with Saturated 2MASS Photometry ↗

To discover and characterize debris disks, one must obtain high-quality photometry in order to accurately fit photosphere models for the host stars. Since the $K$ band always falls on the Rayleigh-Jeans side of a star's spectral energy distribution (SED), its reliability is particularly important for uncovering mid-infrared excess emission from dust. While Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) photometry is the near-infrared benchmark for most stars that host debris disks discovered by Spitzer and the Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), the brightest stars ($K_s < 5$) saturated the 2MASS d…

Higgsino dark matter compatible with the LUX-ZEPLIN high-energy nuclear-recoil event and IceCube constraints ↗

We examine Higgsino dark matter (DM) as a potential explanation of the $248~\mathrm{keV}$ nuclear-recoil event of interest reported by the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, taking into account IceCube constraints on DM annihilation in the Sun. In the nearly pure Higgsino limit, two neutral Majorana states separated by a small mass splitting $δ$ are connected by an off-diagonal coupling to the $Z$ boson, providing a natural realization of inelastic DM. Using a likelihood analysis, we identify 90\% confidence regions compatible with the LZ event and consistent with the null results of IceCube searches…

Temporal Variability of Titan's Middle-Atmospheric Zonal Winds from Southern Fall to Late Winter (2016-2023) ↗

Previous ALMA observations have revealed unexpectedly strong and rapid variations in Titan's high-altitude equatorial zonal winds, which present a challenge to our understanding of this moon's atmospheric dynamics. Here we report further measurements of Titan's zonal wind field at middle atmospheric altitudes $\approx200$-490 km, based on ALMA observations of spatially and spectrally resolved CH$_3$CN emission between 2016-2023 (corresponding to a solar longitude $L_s=81.6^{\circ}$-$156.4^{\circ}$, spanning Titan's late southern autumn to late winter). These observations indicate substantial,…

Baryonic Imprints on DM Halos: the concentration-mass relation and its dependence on 28 model parameters in the CAMELS suite ↗

The evolution of baryons in halos, as well as their gravitational impact on the total-matter phase space, has a rich phenomenology and is vital in answering many questions in both cosmology and astrophysics. We use the CAMELS simulation suite to quantify the impact of twenty-three different galaxy formation parameters/processes (as well as five cosmological parameters) on the concentration--mass relation, $c_{\rm vir}$ - $M_{\rm vir}$, which characterizes the radial density distribution in halos. We construct a simulation-informed nonlinear model for concentration as a function of halo mass, r…

Probing Early Phases of the Epoch of Reionization with the $\mathrm{kSZ}^{2}\times21\,\mathrm{cm}^{2}$ Cross-Correlation ↗

Observations of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) provide key insights into the nature of the first luminous sources and the thermal state of the intergalactic medium (IGM). Cross-correlations between the kinetic Sunyaev--Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect and neutral hydrogen (HI) 21-cm emission offer a promising probe of this era, sensitive to both the ionization and thermal histories of the early Universe. We investigate the cross-correlation of the squared kSZ field with the squared 21-cm intensity-mapping field ($\mathrm{kSZ}^{2}\times21\mathrm{cm}^{2}$) over $z\simeq9$--$16$, focusing on the impact o…

How to assess evidence about Astronomy

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
