Earlier sources: Astronomy

This space thread follows astronomy through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

256 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

VLTI/MATISSE observations of the hot dust around $β$ Pictoris: Observing faint objects with MATISSE ↗

Context: Hot exozodiacal dust has been detected around approximately 20% of nearby main-sequence stars, indicating that it is a common feature of extrasolar planetary systems. However, its spatial distribution and grain properties remain poorly understood. Aims: We aim to show that the spatial distribution of hot dust around beta Pictoris, an iconic planetary system with two known planets and a population of exocomets, can be constrained through a detailed analysis of optical long-baseline interferometry data. Methods: We obtained L-band observations at approximately 3.5 microns of beta Pictor…

Impact of Heavy Modes on Primordial Black Hole Formation ↗

Primordial black holes (PBHs) form from rare fluctuations in the high-density tail of the primordial distribution, making their abundance highly sensitive to primordial non-Gaussianity. Heavy fields during inflation can source such non-Gaussianity, producing characteristic signatures widely explored in cosmological collider physics, yet its impact on PBH formation remains largely unexamined. We investigate this question within quasi-single-field inflation (QSFI), the minimal realization that couples a heavy field to the inflaton. Unlike most PBH studies that consider only the bispectrum, the Q…

Limits on Primordial Black Hole Evaporation from LUX-ZEPLIN ↗

The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) collaboration recently reported a singular anomalous nuclear recoil event at $248 \pm 23 \; \rm keV$, accompanied by a strict null result for unexplained excesses in their primary $5.4-50 \; \rm keV$ search window. The macroscopic momentum transfer required to generate this event is kinematically inaccessible to standard halo cold dark matter, naturally motivating models featuring light, relativistic relics. In this work, we investigate whether a contemporary flux of Hawking-boosted dark matter emitted by evaporating Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) in the $10^{11}-10^{13} \;…

Exoplanet Detection Techniques: Radial Velocity ↗

The radial velocity (RV) technique enabled the discovery of the first exoplanets orbiting Sun-like stars. Since then, improvements in precision and sensitivity have enabled the detection of smaller planets, bringing us closer to the goal of discovering Earth analogs in the coming years. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the radial velocity method. We begin with a detailed description of the technique, including how precise radial velocities are measured and what limitations must be addressed to achieve reliable detection of small signals. We examine the unique challenges associated wi…

Joint Model-independent Constraints on the Post-Newtonian Parameter and Cosmic Curvature from Galaxy-scale Strong Lensing, SNe Ia, BAO, and Cosmic Chronometers ↗

This investigation aims to test the validity of general relativity (GR) on kiloparsec scales via galaxy-scale strong gravitational lensing (SGL) combined with multiple cosmological probes. To circumvent the circularity problem induced by the presumption of a cosmological model based on GR, we apply the distance sum rule in the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric to constrain the post-Newtonian parameter gamma PPN and spatial curvature Omega k independently of any cosmological model. The study introduces two methodological improvements: (i) parameterizing the dark-energy evolution…

JWST Observations of the Metal-poor T Dwarf WISEA J155349.96+693355.2: The First Brown Dwarf Associated with the Gaia-Enceladus Milky Way Substructure ↗

We present JWST NIRSpec and MIRI observations of the metal-poor T dwarf WISEA J155349.96+693355.2. The combined NIRSpec/prism plus MIRI/LRS spectrum (R ~ 100) provides 0.6-12 $μ$m spectroscopic coverage that reveals the presence of H$_2$O, CH$_4$, and NH$_3$ absorption features, enhanced collision-induced H$_2$ absorption, and weak or absent CO and CO$_2$ absorption, all indicators of a metal-poor low-temperature atmosphere. Comparison of the spectral data to a suite of atmosphere models yields an effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$ = 960$^{+28}_{-32}$ K and a solar-scaled metallicity of [M/H]…

GIMLI: a toolkit connecting linear and non-linear magnetohydrodynamic regimes ↗

In this work, we present the General Interface for MPI-AMRVAC / Legolas Interconnection (or GIMLI, for short) as a toolkit for in-depth (magneto)hydrodynamic studies combining linear and non-linear methods. Acting as a bridge between the linear (M)HD spectroscopy code Legolas and the non-linear simulation code MPI-AMRVAC, GIMLI facilitates the initialization of non-linear MPI-AMRVAC simulations with linear solutions. We showcase this functionality on both Cartesian and cylindrical setups, covering representative plasma physical and astrophysical scenarios: Parker unstable magnetized atmosphere…

Testing cosmic acceleration from thermogravity without vacuum energy ↗

We present a first background-level observational test of a thermogravity theory in which the Einstein equations are clipped to a trace-free version, the cosmological constant $Λ$ does not gravitate, and controlled violations of energy conservation obstruct the usual reinstatement of $Λ$ as an integration constant. We therefore set $Λ=0$ and ask whether late-time acceleration can instead be generated solely by energy non-conservation, with no extra background parameter relative to flat $Λ\mathrm{CDM}$. We contrast a minimal universal implementation with a model in which only CDM partakes in no…

Metal-Poor Stars as Metal-Rich Impostors via Planet Engulfment ↗

Planet engulfment leads to planetary mass accretion and angular momentum deposition into the stellar envelope. This study uses MESA models to investigate the long-term impact of engulfment on stellar metallicity and rotational velocity, as well as the effect of rotational mixing on metal enrichment. Our models show that engulfment occurring during the late main-sequence (MS) stage yields significantly higher surface enrichment than at the ZAMS. Rotational mixing generally suppresses enrichment; however, metal-poor stars can sustain super-solar abundances for several Gyr, whereas high-metallici…

    Binary-pulsar Timing: A 3D Solar-System Accelerometer and Unknown-Source Probe ↗

The acceleration of the Solar System barycenter (SSB) offers a unique precision probe of the local gravitational environment, enabling searches for otherwise invisible gravitating sources such as Planet Nine and nearby (primordial) black holes. Using the binary-pulsar timing measurements, we develop an analysis framework that combines the line-of-sight differential accelerations of 26 binary pulsars to jointly reconstruct the three-dimensional acceleration of the SSB and place directional upper limits. Across three smooth Galactic-potential baselines, the residual acceleration is consistent wi…

How to assess evidence about Astronomy

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
