THE INTERNET IS THINKING

Earlier sources: Science

Science investigates the natural world through observation, experiments, and mathematical models. Explore papers and developments in biology, medicine, materials, neuroscience, physics, climate, and mathematics; a reported finding is not necessarily established consensus.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

1339 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Student GenAI use under changing institutional policies: a mixed-methods case study in undergraduate physics ↗

The rise of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in higher education and the resulting institutional responses have prompted research to support evidence-based policy decisions. As policies change to adjust to this disruptive technology, it demands agility from educators. The impacts of these policy changes on student behaviours and outcomes are currently poorly understood. This study examines how students used GenAI across three assessments in an undergraduate physics unit after assessment redesign forced by institutional policy that permitted purpose-specific and open use. Using a mixe…

The genome sequence of the Yellow Meadow Ant, Lasius flavus (Fabricius, 1782) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) ↗

We present a genome assembly from an individual female Lasius flavus (Yellow Meadow Ant; Arthropoda; Insecta; Hymenoptera; Formicidae). The assembly contains two haplotypes with total lengths of 314.61 megabases and 325.88 megabases. Most of haplotype 1 (95.46%) and haplotype 2 (92.16%) are each scaffolded into 15 chromosomal pseudomolecules. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 21.36 kilobases. This assembly was generated as part of the Darwin Tree of Life project, which produces genomes for eukaryotic species found in Britain and Ireland.

Clinical utility of next‑generation sequencing-based newborn screening in a prospective cohort of 1125 newborns in China ↗

Conventional newborn screening (NBS) primarily targets inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) and hearing loss, and has significantly advanced early diagnosis and intervention but remains constrained by limited disease coverage and technical limitations. With the advent of next-generation sequencing (NGS), genomic NBS enables molecular-level detection of a broader spectrum of genetic diseases, and may offer complementary and integrative benefits. This study aimed to assess the clinical utility of genomic NBS and providing evidence to optimize future NBS strategies. A total of 1125 newborns were pr…

A Mixed Formulation Physics-Informed Neural Network for a Forward and an Inverse Euler–Bernoulli Dynamic Beam Problem ↗

A mixed formulation physics-informed neural network (PINN) for solving a forward and an inverse nonlinear Euler–Bernoulli dynamic beam problem is proposed. This approach avoids the computation of fourth-order spatial derivatives in the loss function, thereby mitigating training instability and allowing seamless integration of dynamic forward and inverse problems. A sensitivity analysis is provided for the investigation of the uniqueness of the solution in the inverse problems. The developed programming code is based on open-source Python software 3.13 for deep learning. The impact of the struc…

Potent Activity of Venom from a Single Captive-Bred Bitis rhinoceros Specimen Against Planktonic Clinical MRSA and Early Biofilm Development ↗

Background: Antimicrobial resistance represents a major global health threat, particularly due to the increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Snake venoms have emerged as promising sources of bioactive molecules with potential antimicrobial applications. However, their activity against clinical MRSA isolates and bacterial biofilms remains insufficiently characterized. This study evaluated the antibacterial, biofilm formation inhibitory, and hemocompatibility properties of venom obtained from a captive-bred Bitis rhinoce…

Curriculum-Aligned AR for Secondary Physics: Learning and Engagement in Circular Motion and Magnetic Force ↗

Static diagrams inherently flatten the dynamic, three-dimensional interplay of forces and motion, leaving secondary students reliant on imagination to grasp invisible vectors—a challenge consistently documented in high-stakes physics examinations. While augmented reality (AR) offers a promising medium to externalise these abstractions, rigorous classroom evidence comparing theory-driven, curriculum-aligned AR with standard instructional materials remains scarce. Grounded in Variation Theory, Cognitive Load Theory, and Constructivism, this study evaluated a smartphone-based AR application featu…

Acquisition of novel arrays via horizontal gene transfer rewires CRISPR-mediated defense in Pseudomonas aeruginosa ↗

ABSTRACT Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)-associated (Cas) systems form the adaptive immunity of prokaryotes, conferring sequence-specific protection against genetic parasites. Here, we functionally characterized the type I-F CRISPR-Cas system of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 10145 (PA10145), which led us to discover the existence of an isolated CRISPR array unique to this system. Its core CRISPR-Cas system is composed of a cas operon flanked by two divergently organized arrays: CRISPR2 and CRISPR1. Meanwhile, the isolated CRISPR array, CRISPR3, was found ~1.3 mi…

Using Whole Genome Sequencing to Decipher the Metschnikowia pulcherrima Complex ↗

Metschnikowia pulcherrima, an ascomycetous yeast, has been frequently isolated from various substrates associated with agriculture such as nutrient-rich plant materials (fruit, fruit juices and fermenting grape must), soil and with various insects including fruit flies. Due to the growing consumer demand for wines with reduced levels of additives such as sulphites, there has been great interest in this yeast species for its ability to compete with other fungi. Despite having similar phenotypes, many species related to M. pulcherrima have been described in the last 20 years based on the sequenc…

Lower mitochondrial DNA copy number in ATTRV50M Swedish carriers ↗

Abstract Background Hereditary transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis caused by TTR p.Val50Met (ATTRV50M) is a progressive systemic disease caused by misfolding of the protein transthyretin (TTR). The conversion of TTR into an amyloidogenic state has recently been found to be strongly influenced by a non-native disulfide bond, thus also a redox environment. Variation in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number serves as an indirect marker of redox imbalance and mitochondrial dysfunction. MtDNA is moreover strictly maternally inherited, supporting previous findings where maternal inheritance of the patho…

Clinical Decision‐Making During Monitoring Episodes in Advanced Therapy Management for Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A National Nurse‐Led Service Evaluation ↗

ABSTRACT Background and Aims Advanced therapies for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) require structured monitoring to optimise efficacy and ensure patient safety. Treat‐to‐target frameworks support proactive biomarker and therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM), yet monitoring practice across UK services remains variable and incompletely described. This national, nurse‐led service evaluation aimed to characterise monitoring episodes, describe associations between monitoring strategy and clinical decision‐making and contextualise variation in practice across UK centres. Methods A multicentre retrospe…

How to assess evidence about Science

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
