Biotechnology

This science thread follows biotechnology through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

220 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Recent sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Deep Learning for Protein Secondary-Structure Segmentation in Intermediate-Resolution Cryo-EM Maps: A Resolution-Stratified Benchmark Dataset and Controlled Evaluation ↗

Abstract Accurate segmentation of protein secondary structures in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) maps is crucial for protein tracing and atomic model building, yet remains challenging at intermediate resolutions. Although deep learning architectures have recently been applied to this task, there remains a lack of standardized evaluation protocols and systematic resolution-stratified analyses. Consequently, it remains unclear how segmentation performance varies across finer resolution ranges within the intermediate-resolution regime and how different volumetric segmentation architectures co…

First report on chromosome number and genome size of rare endemic birch Betula klokovii Zaverucha from Ukraine ↗

This study presents the first report on chromosome number and genome size estimate for rare endemic birch species Betula klokovii Zaverucha from Ukraine. Karyological analysis of metaphases revealed a total of 56 chromosomes, confirming a tetraploid cytotype (2 n = 4 x = 56). Concurrently, flow cytometry (FCM) was utilized to conduct a precise genome estimation, yielding a nuclear DNA content of 2C = 1.93-1.99 pg for fresh material and 2.15-2.53 pg for herbarium. In addition, we identified one seedling with lower DNA content of 2C = 1.46 pg that most likely corresponds to F 1 triploid hybrid b

Experimental trophic flexibility guides a compartmentalized genome-scale model of red microalgae Galdieria sulphuraria ↗

The thermoacidophilic red microalga Galdieria sulphuraria combines broad organic-carbon utilization with biotechnological robustness. We integrated cultivation data for strain SAG 107.79 with an organelle-resolved genome-scale metabolic model describing autotrophic, mixotrophic and heterotrophic metabolism. Heterotrophic cultures produced 2.29, 2.03 and 2.14 g L-1 biomass on glucose, xylose and their mixture, respectively, while mixed-sugar cultures consumed glucose before xylose. Biomass composition was similar under mixotrophy and heterotrophy, and stationary-phase glucose consumption suppor

Genome-wide chromatin reset at the onset of leg regeneration in pancrustaceans ↗

Regeneration requires injured tissues to selectively reactivate certain developmental programs while triggering regeneration-specific mechanisms and responding to the immediate consequences of tissue damage. How chromatin states are reorganized during this transition, and whether the underlying sequence of regulatory events is conserved across regenerating animals, remain poorly understood. We address these questions in the two-spotted cricket Gryllus bimaculatus, in which limb regeneration progressively declines during nymphal development and is absent in adults, and extend our analysis to th

Machine-Learning-Based Genomic Prioritization and Genome-Wide Association Analysis of Growth Traits in Central Anatolian Merino Sheep ↗

Growth traits are major economic drivers in sheep production, yet their genetic architecture is highly polygenic and influenced by multiple genetic and environmental factors. Here, we integrated machine-learning-based genomic prioritization and prediction with conventional mixed-model genome-wide association analysis to investigate growth traits in Central Anatolian Merino sheep. Phenotypic records for birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), six-month weight (W6), and average daily gains before (ADWG1) and after weaning (ADWG2) were obtained from 278 lambs genotyped using the Illumina OvineSNP…

    Proximity‐Induced Protein Deglycosylation by Endogenous O‐GlcNAcase ↗

ABSTRACT O‐GlcNAcylation is an important post‐translational modification that regulates numerous cellular processes, yet tools enabling selective removal of O‐GlcNAc from individual proteins via endogenous O‐GlcNAcase (OGA) in living cells remain limited. Here, we report De‐O‐GlcNAcylation‐targeting chimeras (DOGTACs), a chemically induced proximity strategy that selectively reduces O‐GlcNAc from target proteins by recruiting endogenous OGA. Initial designs incorporating potent competitive OGA inhibitors efficiently engaged OGA but failed to induce de‐O‐GlcNAcylation, revealing that catalytic…

Virus‐Induced Genome Editing in the Parasitic Plant Phtheirospermum japonicum ↗

Summary Statement Phtheirospermum japonicum is a genetic model for parasitic Orobanchaceae, a family that includes agriculturally important weeds such as Striga , Orobanche , and Phelipanche . Functional genetic studies in these species are limited by the lack of stable transgenesis protocols, restricting heritable CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing. This challenge is common to many non‐standard model plants and crops. Here, we combined Agrobacterium rhizogenes ‐mediated transformation with virus‐assisted delivery of the ultracompact TnpB nuclease to achieve stable, transgene‐free, heritable genome ed…

Draft genome sequence analysis of a multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli sequence type 3602 isolated from an equine placentitis lesion in Kentucky, USA ↗

ABSTRACT We report the draft genome sequence of a multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli isolate recovered from an equine placentitis lesion associated with late-term abortion. This genome expands available genomic resources for equine-associated E. coli and supports investigation of antimicrobial resistance in equine reproductive disease.

How to assess evidence about Biotechnology

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
