THE INTERNET IS THINKING
Earlier sources: Science
Science investigates the natural world through observation, experiments, and mathematical models. Explore papers and developments in biology, medicine, materials, neuroscience, physics, climate, and mathematics; a reported finding is not necessarily established consensus.
SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.
Open in the map ↗1626 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.
Earlier sources
Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Chromosome-level genome assembly of the Olympia oyster (Ostrea lurida), the only oyster species native to the West Coast of North America ↗
The Olympia oyster ( Ostrea lurida ) was once a major food source and a key component of coastal marine ecosystems and culture on the US West Coast. Overfishing and habitat contamination in the early to mid-20th century severely depleted populations of Olympia oysters, and the species is currently considered a species of concern. Although multiple restoration efforts are underway, progress understanding the species biology and recovery potential has been limited by the historical lack of genomic resources. Here, we report a chromosome-level assembly of the Olympia oyster. The assembly was buil

Toward A Whole-Brain Interface Enabled by High-Resolution Surface Electrophysiology ↗
The goal of building a whole-brain interface - capable of generating a real-time digital representation of the state of the entire central nervous system - has long been framed as a hardware challenge of recording simultaneously from ever-larger numbers of microelectrodes. Advances in high-resolution neural interfaces now enable electrophysiologic interaction with the human nervous system at spatial and temporal resolutions previously unattainable without disrupting tissue architecture or physiology. These capabilities create new opportunities for mechanistic neuroscience, neuroprosthetics, an

EXCON: a scalable, reproducible Nextflow pipeline for CAFE-based gene EXpansion and CONtraction analysis ↗
Gene family expansion and contraction analysis is a commonly used approach in evolutionary comparative genomics to identify lineage-specific evolutionary pressures on gene copy/family number. CAFE is one of the most popular tools to measure changes in gene family size, but requires a high level of bioinformatics expertise, manual parameter tuning and preprocessing. Here we present EXCON, an automated, Eco-Flow community-developed Nextflow pipeline that integrates NCBI genome download, annotation quality and format pre-processing, orthologous gene family identification (Orthofinder), ultrametri

Consolidating species boundaries in the Fusarium oxysporum species complex based on genomic evidence ↗
The Fusarium oxysporum species complex (FOSC) comprises numerous plant pathogens infecting crops such as tomato, lettuce, melon, and banana. Despite its economic and ecological importance and decades of research, the species names linked to different phylogenetic lineages within this species complex remain largely controversial. Earlier taxonomic frameworks relied on a limited number of marker genes, variable taxon sampling and inconsistent species definitions, leading to a fragmented and unstable taxonomy. To address these challenges, we here analysed nearly 2,500 conserved marker genes from

Scalable saturation mutagenesis reveals gene regulatory architecture and rare variant effects ↗
Long-context sequence-to-function models enable nucleotide-resolution prediction of regulatory variant effects, motivating comprehensive mutational interrogation across broad genomic contexts. Yet conventional in silico saturation mutagenesis (ISM) scores mutations one at a time, requiring millions of model evaluations for a single gene and billions to trillions at genome scales. Here, we introduce Multi-ISM, a scalable framework that reformulates ISM as a sparse recovery problem. Multi-ISM generates mutational maps using 45-fold fewer model evaluations than exhaustive single-variant ISM and m

TET loss of function selects for aneuploidies that confer a proliferative advantage ↗
Mutations in the Ten-Eleven Translocation (TET) family of DNA dioxygenases are among the most common epigenetic alterations in clonal hematopoiesis and hematologic malignancies, yet how TET loss of function reshapes genome evolution during cellular expansion remains to be fully understood. Here we show that loss of Tet2/3 in invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells drives aggressive lymphoid expansion that is consistently associated with recurrent chromosome 17 trisomy, a dominant aneuploid state observed across more than ten independently derived tumors following transplantation into immunocom

Functional connectivity correlates of post-acute covid 19 cognitive and neuropsychiatric complications ↗
Abstract Background The neuropsychiatric sequelae (cognitive deficits, anxiety and depression) post-COVID-19 exist as part of the spectrum of the multisystemic long COVID. People with these symptoms have been shown to have worse functional outcomes. Hence, this significantly impacts the economy, primarily due to productivity losses. Yet, the precise underlying pathogenesis remains unknown, as do any diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers. Aim This study aims to identify functionally impacted brain regions in those with post-COVID-19 neurological sequelae and to evaluate how alterations in brain f

Cross-source proteogenomic profiling of human microglia reveals a conserved core membrane protein and HERV signature ↗
Microglia are essential immune cells of the brain parenchyma which are responsible for maintaining homeostasis and responding to brain injury. When activated, they induce immune signaling and become phagocytic. In the context of neurodegenerative diseases, they exhibit both pro- and anti-inflammatory properties. Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) are the remnants of ancient retroviral germline infections that integrated into the human genome, and their expression has been directly linked to microglial-mediated neurodegenerative diseases. Despite this, HERV expression is not consistently inc

Pleasurable beliefs and hedonic belief-based utility ↗
Humans are consistently biased towards pleasurable beliefs, for example, that we are better than average regarding desirable traits and that our futures will be brighter than statistically plausible. According to an influential theory within psychology, neuroscience, and behavioural economics, we are biased towards these (and other) pleasurable beliefs because they maximise hedonic belief-utility. I challenge this theory and suggest alternative explanations for pleasurable beliefs and the psychological processes that produce them. According to the view I present, such beliefs stem from process

Beyond problem solving: Adaptive reframing in human and artificial intelligence ↗
Research on human and artificial intelligence has largely focused on problem solving: given a predefined problem, can an agent produce an effective solution? Yet many real-world challenges cannot be captured by a fixed problem representation. They require agents not only to solve problems, but also to recognize when the original problem representation has become inadequate and must be revised to reflect new evidence or changes in the problem itself. We argue that this capacity, termed adaptive reframing, constitutes a fundamental but under-researched dimension of intelligence. We propose a mul

How to assess evidence about Science
Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
