Earlier sources: Science

Science investigates the natural world through observation, experiments, and mathematical models. Explore papers and developments in biology, medicine, materials, neuroscience, physics, climate, and mathematics; a reported finding is not necessarily established consensus.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

Enzyme‐mediated remodeling of the extracellular matrix and glycocalyx to enhance immunotherapy in solid tumors ↗

Abstract The tumor‐associated extracellular matrix (ECM) and glycocalyx form a dynamic barrier that provides physical shielding and immunosuppressive signaling, leading to therapeutic resistance. A growing body of evidence supports enzyme‐based strategies to remodel these barriers and improve therapeutic access to tumors. This review examines enzymes that act as “path cleansers” by cleaving components of the ECM or the glycocalyx to restore the efficacy of immunotherapies. Moreover, some enzymes may exert effects beyond barrier remodeling, including modulation of signaling pathways, enhancemen…

Cardiac amyloidosis and coronary artery disease: an overlooked clinical intersection ↗

Cardiac amyloidosis has emerged as an important and underrecognized cause of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, particularly in elderly patients who commonly carry concomitant coronary artery disease. The coexistence of these two conditions creates a layered diagnostic and therapeutic problem. Epicardial atherosclerosis is present in roughly 30-40% of patients with cardiac amyloidosis, yet the dominant ischemic mechanism in the amyloidotic heart is rarely flow-limiting epicardial obstruction. Instead, ischemia is driven by coronary microvascular dysfunction arising from amyloid in…

A developmental single-cell atlas of the Drosophila visual system glia reveals cell type diversification and subcellular mRNA compartmentalization ↗

Glial cells are essential for proper nervous system development and function. To understand glial development and function, we comprehensively annotated the glial cells from two large single-cell mRNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) atlases of the developing Drosophila visual system. This allowed us to identify all glial cell types from larval to adult stages and follow their developmental trajectories to understand how the diversity of glial types is generated during development. We show that whereas most glial types, such as chiasm glia, gradually change their transcriptome as they mature during deve…

The genome sequence of Red Currant, Ribes rubrum L., 1753 (Saxifragales: Grossulariaceae) ↗

We present a genome assembly of Ribes rubrum (Red Currant; Streptophyta; Magnoliopsida; Saxifragales; Grossulariaceae). The two haplotypes have lengths of 834.25 megabases and 821.88 megabases. Most of the haplotype 1 assembly (95.96%) was assigned to 8 chromosomal pseudomolecules. Haplotype 2 was assembled to scaffold level. The mitochondrial sequence has a length of 531.84 kilobases and the plastid genome assembly has a length of 157.8 kilobases. Gene annotation of this assembly by Ensembl identified 28,910 protein-coding genes. This assembly was generated as part of the Darwin Tree of Life…

Chromatin Accessibility Profiling of the Canine Brain Reveals Regulatory Programs Associated With Dog‐Wolf Divergence and Human Psychiatric Risk ↗

The domestic dog has emerged as a valuable model for investigating the biology of social behavior and neuropsychiatric disease, yet a comprehensive map of gene regulatory elements across the canine brain is still lacking. Here, we generated an ATAC-seq atlas spanning seven major brain regions and the pituitary gland from four adult beagle dogs. We identified 251,492 putative cis-regulatory elements (CREs) and found that chromatin accessibility profiles resolve anatomically distinct regions into discrete regulatory modules, including striatal, cortical-associated, hypothalamic/habenular, and pi…

    A physics-informed B-spline reconstruction of flow data ↗

Continuous B-spline models provide compact, differentiable representations of discrete flow snapshots, but data-only fitting does not control consistency with prescribed governing equations. We introduce physics-informed B-spline reconstruction (PI-BSR), a post hoc method that optimizes a fixed tensor-product B-spline representation of a completed flow trajectory. PI-BSR combines data fidelity with soft residuals for the governing partial differential equations, initial and boundary conditions, and integral balances over spatial subdomains. A shared-face construction ensures algebraic cancella…
