Earlier sources: Science

Science investigates the natural world through observation, experiments, and mathematical models. Explore papers and developments in biology, medicine, materials, neuroscience, physics, climate, and mathematics; a reported finding is not necessarily established consensus.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

1617 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Distinct Feedback-Strength Requirements for Quantum-State Ensemble Preparation under Channel-Equivalent Monitoring ↗

Different measurements of the same environment can preserve the average quantum channel yet change the feedback strength needed to prepare a state ensemble. We establish this distinction for a multiqubit register under complete Pauli monitoring, targeting the uniform ensemble of real-amplitude pure states. With unit detection efficiency, public records, and bounded Hamiltonian feedback, fixed transverse noise requires a minimum peak strength proportional to $ε^{-1}$ at distributional error $ε$. Tangent noise instead admits a construction requiring only $O[\sqrt{\log(1/ε)}]$. At fixed preparati…

Bypassing no-go theorems on mixed classical-quantum systems: the (counter)example of hybrid van Hove theory ↗

Motivated by models of mixed quantum-classical hybrid theories, we consider the representation of classical observables as Hilbert-space operators based on van Hove's unitary representation of contact transformations. This leads to a reformulation of classical mechanics where the phase space density satisfies the Liouville equation and, more importantly, classical observables are represented by van Hove operators that satisfy a commutation algebra isomorphic to the classical Poisson algebra of functions in phase space. Thus, this Hilbert space approach captures all the essential features of th…

Optical characterization of excited-state spin Hamiltonians and clock transitions at telecommunication wavelength in Tm3+:YAlO3 ↗

The zero-phonon line (ZPL) between the two excited-state manifolds 3F4 and 3H4 of the trivalent thulium ion in yttrium aluminum perovskite (Tm3+:YAlO3) lies within the telecom E-band at around 1451 nm and exhibits an optical coherence time of a few μs at cryogenic temperatures. To improve this time in view of potential applications, e.g. single-photon sources and optical quantum memory, we characterized the magnetic properties of the lowest Stark levels of these two manifolds. Varying the external magnetic field amplitude and orientation, we measured the enhanced nuclear Zeeman splitting by pr…

Phase-accumulating hyperfine strain sensing with rare-earth-ion phase memories ↗

Long-lived hyperfine coherences in rare-earth-ion crystals provide controlled phase evolution windows for metrology. We use this resource to propose an experimental protocol for accessing strain shifts of ground state hyperfine transitions in non-Kramers rare-earth-ion doped (REID) materials, a quantity that is difficult to access directly with conventional spectroscopic methods. Starting from the crystal field Hamiltonian, we relate the response to strain-dependent effective quadrupole and Zeeman tensors, including changes in electronic wave functions, virtual electronic admixtures, and the b…

High-gain vortex transfer via activated forbidden transitions in molecular magnets ↗

Vortex light has garnered considerable interest in recent years owing to its distinctive properties and broad application potential. In this paper, we employ a conventional three-level ladder-type configuration in molecular magnets to realize high-gain vortex light transfer by enabling otherwise forbidden transitions. We demonstrate that the intensity and phase of the generated vortex signal field are governed by the detuning of the probe field and the strength of the control field, and that the topological charges of the incident and generated fields obey a well-defined algebraic relation dur…

Distributed laser energy deposition enables fog-resilient optical communications ↗

Fog and clouds remain major obstacles to free-space optical (FSO) communications because micron-sized droplets can impose tens of decibels of attenuation. Ultrashort laser filamentation can transiently clear fog in laboratory-scale experiments, but its extension to atmospheric-scale propagation has remained uncertain. Here we demonstrate laser-assisted fog clearing under atmospheric-scale propagation conditions over a 140-m optical path using a high-energy, high-average-power picosecond laser and weak focusing to sustain extended multifilamentation. A steady-state transparent channel approxima…

Supporting functionals and singular boundary geometry of two-qubit entanglement of formation ↗

We give a criterion for the existence of a global supporting affine functional for the entanglement of formation at an entangled two-qubit state. It exists if and only if the spin-flip bilinear form is nondegenerate on the support of the state, or equivalently, if the last concurrence root associated with the support is nonzero. In this case the entanglement of formation is locally Lipschitz continuous. In the degenerate case the state has rank two or three, and its projective support is tangent to the product-state quadric. For suitable perturbations outside the support, the entanglement of f…

Quantum Approximate Optimisation Algorithm for Protein Sidechain Packing ↗

Sidechain packing is a critical stage in protein folding, with direct implications for structure-based drug discovery. Google DeepMind's tool, AlphaFold2, predicts protein backbone reliably but sidechain positioning less accurately. Recovering the lowest-energy rotamer assignment over a fixed backbone is NP-hard. We present a hybrid quantum-classical pipeline that repacks sidechains on the AlphaFold backbone using the Quantum Approximate Optimisation Algorithm (QAOA), encoding the one- and two-body energies as a quadratic unconstrained binary optimisation (QUBO) problem. We introduce a constra…

On the applicability of Kolmogorov's theory of probability to the description of quantum phenomena. Part II: Bell inequalities ↗

Among the various "no-go theorems" in the foundations of quantum mechanics, Bell inequalities are among the few, which do not implicitly rely on the mathematical structure of quantum mechanics. Instead, Bell inequalities are commonly understood to rest on Kolmogorov's theory of probability and a "locality" assumption. Physical evidence supporting their violation is hence taken as evidence against at least one of these two assumptions. This work provides a comprehensive analysis of the physical debate on Bell inequalities from the point of view of Kolmogorov's theory of probability, focusing on…

How to assess evidence about Science

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
