THE INTERNET IS THINKING

Earlier sources: Science

Science investigates the natural world through observation, experiments, and mathematical models. Explore papers and developments in biology, medicine, materials, neuroscience, physics, climate, and mathematics; a reported finding is not necessarily established consensus.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

1694 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Unreported large errors from two PAMGuard three-dimensional localizers of whale calls ↗

Confidence intervals of location (CIL) of calling marine mammals, derived from time-differences-of-arrival (TDOA) between receivers, depend on errors of TDOAs, receiver location, clocks, sound speeds, and location method. When these errors are minuscule, simulations yield small errors of PAMGuard's 3D simplex localizer when click sounds of beaked and sperm whales originate in a 1000 x 1000 x 1000 $\mbox{m}^3$ region using five receivers having horizontal and vertical separations of 1000 m and 150 m respectively. Realistic uncertainties of sound speed up to $\pm 10$ m/s lead to errors up to $10…

Gradient-Based Construction of Collisionless Steady-State Guiding-Center Distributions in Tokamaks and Stellarators ↗

We present a matrix-free residual-minimization method for preparing guiding-center distribution functions on finite grids. The method minimizes a fixed conservative discrete residual in the physical Jacobian metric using Polak-Ribiere+ iterations with exact quadratic line searches. JAX/XLA evaluates the operator and its adjoint without assembling a four-dimensional matrix; independent magnetic-moment slices are batched and iterations are compiled into one execution graph. An axisymmetric hierarchy verifies invariant references and tests the workflow using a NUBEAM fast-ion distribution togethe…

Indirect-Drive Fusion Target Design for Commercial Fusion Energy ↗

This paper presents the physics basis for commercially relevant laser indirect-drive (LID) (radiation-driven) inertial fusion energy (IFE) using a 10 MJ laser driver. To date, this approach, proven at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), remains the first and only controlled fusion method to demonstrate the key physics required for fusion energy production, including a self-sustained burning plasma, substantially de-risking the path to commercial fusion energy. Building directly on these results, we present scaled designs to larger target sizes and fusion gains relevant for commercial power g…

Spatial Aggregation of ROC and Precision-Recall Curves ↗

Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) and Precision-Recall (PR) curves are widely used to assess the discrimination ability of forecasts for binary events, such as threshold exceedances or warnings of extreme events. In weather forecasting, forecasts are provided as spatial fields, yielding location-wise ROC and PR curves that are often aggregated to facilitate comparison. However, the effect of the aggregation strategy on performance assessment remains poorly understood. We investigate how different aggregation strategies for ROC and PR curves affect the assessment of discrimination ability…

A more predictable Madden-Julian Oscillation index derived from Koopman spectral analysis ↗

The Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) is a major source of subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) predictability. The MJO is commonly defined and tracked with indices such as the Real-time Multivariate MJO (RMM) index. Although the RMM provides a useful description of the MJO, its evolution can be noisy and difficult to predict. We define an MJO index using a data-driven approximation of the Koopman operator. The Koopman index captures similar tropical circulation and convection patterns to the RMM but evolves more smoothly and predictably. Skillful prediction extends to 46 days for the Koopman index com…

    Period-Inverted Blast-Radius Normalization for a Non-Ablating Hypersonic Reentry Source Using OSIRIS-REx Capsule Infrasound ↗

Cylindrical blast wave theory relates infrasound from hypersonic sources to energy deposition through a characteristic blast radius R_0, yet the normalization constant k in the scaling R_0 = k (E_0/p_0)^(1/2) differs by up to 40% across the formulations examined here. This uncertainty affects period-based source characterization for elevated atmospheric sources relevant to infrasound monitoring. Using infrasound from the OSIRIS-REx Sample Return Capsule reentry on 24 September 2023, observed periods at 39 stations spanning source altitudes of 44-62 km are inverted through a weak-shock propagat…

    "La Ola-MJO": a public-friendly nickname for the Madden-Julian Oscillation ↗

The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the leading intraseasonal driver of tropical weather, comparable to the interannual ''El Ni{ñ}o/La Ni{ñ}a'', yet remains largely unfamiliar outside the scientific community. The MJO is atmospherically like a ''La Ni{ñ}a'' going around the earth, and metaphorically as ''La Ola'', Spanish for ''The Wave'', evoking a stadium wave. Thus a pedagogical nickname such as ''La Ola-MJO'' could enhance forecast uptake, especially among climate-vulnerable communities.

Disentangled Fingerprints suggest no historical weakening of Atlantic Overturning and Subpolar Gyre ↗

The AMOC and the Subpolar Gyre are key components of the Earth's climate system, both potentially prone to destabilization and abrupt shifts under anthropogenic forcing.Given the strong influence of the AMOC and the SPG on global climate, detecting changes in their stability is of high importance, yet is hindered by the limited length of observational records. In the absence of long-term direct AMOC observations, several observation-based fingerprints of the AMOC have been proposed. However, existing fingerprints do not clearly distinguish between SPG and AMOC variability, instead reflecting an…

How Much Hyperspectral Information Does Chlorophyll Retrieval Really Need? ↗

Satellite ocean color algorithms translate water-leaving radiance into ecological information at spatial and temporal scales that cannot be achieved by field sampling alone. One important variable derived from water-leaving radiance is chlorophyll-a concentration ($\mathrm{CHL\text{-}a}$), a widely used indicator of phytoplankton biomass and physiology. Empirical retrieval algorithms are commonly used for $\mathrm{CHL\text{-}a}$ estimation, but their performance can vary across sensors and optically diverse waters. The Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission provides unprecede…

Butterfly Effect and the Kinetic Energy Cascade in Probabilistic Machine Learning Weather Prediction Models ↗

This study analyses kinetic energy (KE) spectra, difference kinetic energy (DKE) spectra, and signatures of KE transfer across spatial scales in four state-of-the-art probabilistic machine learning weather prediction (MLWP) models: NeuralGCM-ENS, FourCastNet 3, AIFS-ENS, and GenCast. Results are compared with those from the physics-based numerical weather prediction model IFS-ENS. While NeuralGCM-ENS successfully reproduces the expected upscale transfer of KE, noise injection at its encoder stage underestimates mesoscale KE. Conversely, AIFS-ENS, GenCast, and FourCastNet 3 produce realistic KE…

How to assess evidence about Science

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
