THE INTERNET IS THINKING
Earlier sources: Neuroscience
This science thread follows neuroscience through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.
SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.
Open in the map ↗24 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.
Earlier sources
Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Brain Dynamics Underlying Reaching Movements Under Uncertainty. ↗
Motor responses are influenced by inferred predictability, but it remains unclear how uncertainty, or its inverse, precision, is encoded within motor control networks. In this study, we combined computational modeling of reaching movement response speed with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We used a cueing paradigm with changing cue predictability (~50%, ~70%, and ~90%) to test how predictive inference about left/right reaching responses affected cortical activity and network connectivity in 28 healthy young adults. Behavioral results showed that the response speed differences be

Parental brain responses to own and unknown children's emotional facial expressions: An fMRI study. ↗
The parent-child relationship is crucial for children's socio-emotional development. Previous research, mostly in mothers of infants, has implicated neural networks subserving reward, saliency, and theory of mind (ToM). In this preregistered study, we sought to extend these findings to fathers and older children by examining maternal and paternal brain responses to preschool-aged children's emotional faces. Our investigation included 89 parents (41 mothers, 48 fathers) and their children (44 daughters, 45 sons). We examined the effects of children's facial identity (own, unknown) and emotion (

Timing of Deep Brain Stimulation and Cognitive Trajectories in GBA1-Associated Parkinson's Disease. ↗
Background Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) carrying GBA1 variants often develop advanced motor complications that prompt evaluation for deep brain stimulation (DBS). However, concerns about accelerated cognitive decline after DBS in GBA1 carriers complicate clinical decision making. A critical aspect that is increasingly gaining attention is the time at which DBS is performed. Objective The objective is to determine how the timing of DBS in relation to PD onset impacts cognitive trajectories across different GBA1 variant classes and in individuals without GBA1 variants. Methods A mul

A genetic screen for suppressors of neuron degeneration in a C. elegans sod-1G85R model of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. ↗
Genetic variants in superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) cause the progressive neurodegenerative disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Treatments for this disease are limited, and the unique vulnerability of cholinergic and glutamatergic motor neurons to degeneration seen in ALS patients is not clearly understood. Identifying genetic modifiers of neurodegeneration can provide insight into the selective vulnerability of motor neurons in ALS and may accelerate identification of novel therapeutic targets. Here, we describe a forward genetic screen for suppressors of the stress-induced glutamaterg

Traumatic brain injury induces cell-type-specific remodelling of the proteostasis network. ↗
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) triggers competing damage and repair processes that can result in chronic neurodegenerative protein conformational disorders. Acute alterations in proteostasis have been reported after injury, but a comprehensive understanding of changes to the proteostasis network (PN) has been limited by the complex cellular pathology of TBI. The recent enumeration of the human PN and advances in single-cell transcriptomics make it possible to delineate PN dynamics in multifactorial diseases such as TBI. Here, we leverage archival mouse and human transcriptomic data to identify c

Brain Penetrant Calcium Channel Blockers Were Not Associated With Reduced Alcohol Consumption: Converging Results From Two Large Independent Cohort Studies Using Electronic Health Records. ↗
Purpose Alcohol use disorder (AUD) remains a major public health problem, with few effective treatments. L-type calcium channel blockers (LTCCBs) have genetic and preclinical support as potential treatments for AUD. Methods We evaluated whether brain penetrant (BP)-LTCCBs are associated with reduced alcohol consumption in two preregistered observational cohort studies using electronic health records from the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC). New users of BP-LTCCBs (nifedipine or felodipine) were compared with new users of a non-BP-LTCCB (a

Charting the Normal Development of Structural Brain Connectivity in Utero Using Diffusion MRI. ↗
Understanding the structural connectivity of the human brain during fetal life is critical for uncovering the early foundations of neural function and vulnerability to developmental disorders. Diffusion-weighted MRI (dMRI) enables non-invasive mapping of white matter pathways and construction of the brain's structural connectome, but its application to the fetal brain has been limited by data scarcity and technical difficulties in analyzing fetal dMRI data. Here, we present the largest study to date of in utero brain connectivity, analyzing high-quality dMRI data from 198 fetuses between 22 an

Removing Timing Shortcuts Improves Non-Invasive Brain-to-Text ↗
We find that major reported improvements in decoding words from non-invasive brain recordings are largely reproducible without any brain data. In the influential work of d'Ascoli et al. (2025), time series of brain activity from subjects perceiving continuous speech are segmented into fixed-length windows starting at each word. A neural network then generates predictions for all of the words in a sentence together. Neighbouring windows partially overlap, implicitly revealing the interval between words. Since these intervals indicate the duration of the words spoken, and different words tend to…

Explainable pathomics and multi-omics define PDAC innervation subtypes linked to neuron–tumor crosstalk and immunotherapy response ↗
Neural regulation and an imbalanced immune microenvironment promote Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) progression. However, the molecular mechanisms and clinical implications of neuron–tumor interactions remain unclear. We integrated single-cell and spatial transcriptomic data to characterize neuron–tumor interactions in PDAC and classified patients into five innervation subtypes. We then assessed subtype differences in prognosis, immune microenvironment, and genomic instability. In parallel, we developed and externally validated a pathology-based machine learning model for subtype predi…

How to assess evidence about Neuroscience
Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
