Earlier sources: Neuroscience

This science thread follows neuroscience through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

24 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

From Brain to Blood to Skin: Compartment Biology, Interstitial Fluid Dynamics, and Microneedle Sampling of Neurological Biomarkers ↗

Proteins released after brain injury can be measured in blood, but a blood result does not directly measure the concentration at the site of injury. Between brain tissue and a peripheral sample, proteins may enter brain interstitial fluid (ISF), exchange with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), leave through several drainage or barrier pathways, and undergo dilution and clearance. This narrative review examines those steps for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase-L1 (UCH-L1), neurofilament light chain (NfL), S100B, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), tau proteoforms, and am…

Expanding Genetic Code to Generate Human Brain Organoids with Both Vasculature and Microglia‐Like Cells ↗

Brain organoids offer an invaluable model system for studying human brain development and disease. However, the establishment of high-fidelity brain organoids with multiple cell lineages, including vasculature and immune cells, remains a huge challenge. Here, we present a new strategy to generate human cerebral organoids with vasculature and microglia-like cells using genetic code expansion technology via site-specific protein engineering. The strategy integrates orthogonal genetic translation machinery in hPSCs, enabling temporal control of ETV2 expression and endothelial differentiation in h…

AXIAL: Attention-based eXplainability for Interpretable Alzheimer’s Localized diagnosis using 2D CNNs on 3D MRI brain scans ↗

Deep learning models for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) diagnosis from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have achieved high performance, but clinical adoption remains limited because reliability and generalizability remain uncertain. Reported results are often difficult to compare because cohorts and evaluation protocols differ, while model explanations are rarely assessed quantitatively. This study investigates whether attention-based models evaluated under a rigorous and reproducible protocol can provide reproducible performance estimates and biomarker-oriented population-level explanations. We pro…

Chromatin Accessibility Profiling of the Canine Brain Reveals Regulatory Programs Associated With Dog‐Wolf Divergence and Human Psychiatric Risk ↗

The domestic dog has emerged as a valuable model for investigating the biology of social behavior and neuropsychiatric disease, yet a comprehensive map of gene regulatory elements across the canine brain is still lacking. Here, we generated an ATAC-seq atlas spanning seven major brain regions and the pituitary gland from four adult beagle dogs. We identified 251,492 putative cis-regulatory elements (CREs) and found that chromatin accessibility profiles resolve anatomically distinct regions into discrete regulatory modules, including striatal, cortical-associated, hypothalamic/habenular, and pi…

Next-generation brain organoids: neural complexity from cellular diversity to functional networks. ↗

Brain organoids, as pioneering three-dimensional (3D) in vitro platforms, have profoundly advanced our understanding of human brain development and disease mechanisms. This review summarizes recent progress in enhancing cellular diversity, structural organization, and functional complexity within brain organoids. A key application of these models lies in disease modelling, encompassing neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders as well as brain tumours, which enables personalized drug screening and mechanistic studies. Despite persistent challenges related to neuronal maturation, vascu

    Neuroscience-Informed Psychoeducation for Dementia ↗

Dementia is a progressive syndrome characterized by neurodegeneration across distributed brain networks that results in cognitive, behavioral, and functional declines. Conventional psychoeducation provides disease facts and resources but often lacks the mechanistic grounding needed to translate knowledge into durable caregiver skills. Neuroscience-informed psychoeducation (NIPE) extends traditional approaches by offering brain-based explanations of symptoms and caregiving challenges, paired with learning principles optimized for stressed learners. This chapter proposes a dementia-specific NIPE

Self-Referential Social Processing in Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder: Advancing Theoretical Precision and Clinical Insights with Model-Based Neuroscience ↗

Background. Individuals with schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) often misjudge whether social cues, like eye contact, are meant for them, which can fuel symptoms and functional impairment. These difficulties appear to stem from disruptions in how social information is dynamically processed (“evidence accumulation”). We used neurocognitive joint modeling to investigate which neural signals shape evidence accumulation during gaze perception and whether these brain-behavior links help explain disrupted self-referential social processing.Methods. Leveraging EEG data from N=99 SZ, BD, and

Lewy Body Disease Across Aging: Clinical and Neuropathological Correlates in a Population Brain Bank. ↗

Lewy body disease (LBD) is defined by neuronal α-synuclein pathology, but how Braak-staged LBD relates to mixed neuropathology and clinical manifestations within a single population-based cohort remains incompletely characterized. This is especially relevant in cohorts enriched for younger individuals, which may better inform real-world biomarker interpretation and predictive value than cohorts dominated by the oldest-old. The objective of this study was to determine how Braak-staged LBD relates to age, mixed neuropathology, and clinical manifestations within a single population-based cohort.

Image-guided programming improves motor control in chronic subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation in Parkinson's disease: A prospective study. ↗

BackgroundImage-guided programming (IGP) enables optimization and personalization of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for patients with Parkinson's disease. Although its role in initial programming has been examined, evidence for its value in chronic stimulation remains limited. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of IGP in individuals with Parkinson's disease receiving chronic subthalamic nucleus (STN)-DBS with conventional programming (CP).MethodsWe reviewed optimal stimulation configurations using IGP with STIMVIEW™ XT in 30 patients with PD implanted with directional DB2202 electrodes. Stem cell-derived brain repair for Parkinson’s disease: a review of strategies to improve engraftment ↗

Abstract Induced pluripotent stem cell-derived dopaminergic progenitor transplantation has received conditional approval in Japan for Parkinson’s disease following the Kyoto Phase I/II trial. Early clinical studies demonstrate favourable safety and preliminary efficacy, but interpretation is limited by open-label designs. Preclinical evidence reveals variable graft survival and low differentiation efficiency, highlighting opportunities for optimisation. This review examines strategies to improve survival, differentiation, and functional integration of transplanted dopaminergic progenitors.

How to assess evidence about Neuroscience

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
