Earlier sources: Biotechnology
This science thread follows biotechnology through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.
SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.
Open in the map ↗224 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.
Earlier sources
Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Genome assemblies and annotations of the poneroid ants Platythyrea mocquerysi (Ponerinae) and Stigmatomma oregonense (Amblyoponinae) ↗
We present draft genome assemblies for two poneroid ant species with distinctive life history traits: Platythyrea mocquerysi Emery, 1899 (Ponerinae) and Stigmatomma oregonense Wheeler, 1915 (Amblyoponinae). Platythyrea mocquerysi is a Malagasy ant in which larvae produce secretions from a ventral tubercle that are consumed by adults, representing an unusual form of larva-to-adult trophallaxis. Stigmatomma oregonense, a North American "dracula ant," feeds non-lethally on larval haemolymph. Using PacBio HiFi long-read sequencing, we assembled the P. mocquerysi genome (187 Mb, 307 scaffolds, N50

Goat genome assemblies, nine breeds for pangenome contribution ↗
The goat research community benefits from one of the most comprehensive livestock genome assemblies, ARS1. However, the rich diversity of goat breeds suggests that a single individual genome is not enough to represent the species full genomic content. Third-generation sequencing technologies have recently made it possible to generate very high quality assemblies that should enable to elucidate unique and/or complex phenotype determinisms depending on genetic structural variations. In the SeqOccin project, nine goat breeds were selected to represent French goat genetic diversity: Alpine, Boer,

Genome-engineered C. elegans strains with sex-transformed neurons and gut ↗
The sexual identity of specific tissues can be altered through cell-autonomous manipulation of the sex determination pathway in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans . Previously described sexually mosaic strains carried multicopy transgenic arrays that are potentially subject to transgene silencing or misexpression artefacts. We used here the CRISPR/Cas9 system to engineer strains in which coding sequences for either a masculinizing agent (FEM-3) or a feminizing agent (intracellular domain of TRA-2) are inserted with a trans-splicing system at the 3 end of endogenous genetic loci that are known

Genome sequence data of Ascogaster reticulata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) ↗
Parasitoid wasps develop in or on other arthropods and have evolved a wide range of strategies for exploiting their hosts. Ascogaster reticulata is a solitary egg to larval endoparasitoid wasp belonging to the subfamily Cheloninae of Braconidae. We constructed a genome assembly using long-read sequence data. The assembled genome was 280.5 Mbp, consisting of 209 contigs. The N50 value and GC content ratio were 13.9 Mbp and 30.43%, respectively. The percentage of transposable elements and repetitive regions was 52.43%. The predicted number of genes is 27,261. Merqury revealed that the QV value a

An improved Trypanosoma vivax genome assembly confirms the distinct organisation of its variant antigen repertoire ↗
Trypanosoma vivax is a unicellular parasite spread by biting flies and an important livestock pathogen across sub-Saharan Africa and South America. Alongside its better known relative, T. brucei, it causes animal trypanosomosis. An accurate genome sequence is essential to functional genetics as well as the design of novel diagnostics, drugs and vaccines. However, the existing T. vivax genome sequence is fragmentary, making it difficult to examine genomic features such as the Variant Surface Glycoprotein (VSG) genes that are the basis for antigenic variation, a key phenotype that underpins immu

Exploring protein duplication across Archaea genomes ↗
Gene duplication is a major driver of genomic innovation, but whether paralog accumulation scales uniformly with increasing genome size across the domain Archaea remains unclear. This study presents a domain-wide analysis of 1,829 archaeal genomes and their predicted proteomes to evaluate protein family expansions, their distribution, and lineage-specific patterns of gene duplication. Protein family expansions were classified as recent (90% sequence identity), intermediate (70%), or old (40%) duplications based on sequence-identity thresholds within each family. The findings show that gene dup

Show HN: tgv: Genome viewer for you and your agents ↗
Hi HN, I’m sharing tgv, a new kind of genome viewer built for humans-agent collaboration in genomics. I work in a cancer diagnostics lab and we check cancer patients’ sequencing data in genome viewers every day. Frustrated by the standard tools, last year I built tgv, a Vim-style, keyboard-driven genome viewer. In 2026, while agents are scarily good at bioinformatics, bioinformatics tools haven’t kept up. tgv now brings a new kind of research wor…

FunFOLD5: Combining Localised Templates and Structural Homology for Accurate Predictions of Biologically Relevant Protein–Ligand Interactions ↗
Abstract Motivation A central challenge in protein–ligand modelling is to predict not only the presence of an interaction, but also the correct ligand identity, binding-site location, and biologically relevant bound conformation. While recent deep learning approaches such as AlphaFold3 and Boltz-2 have demonstrated impressive accuracy in modelling protein–ligand complexes, these methods typically require prior knowledge of the ligand, focus on a single dominant binding pose, and rely heavily on large training datasets. Template-based methods offer a complementary solution by leveraging experim…

Engineering Protein Circuits for Cellular Control and Precision Immunotherapy ↗
Abstract Protein structural complexity confers responsiveness and modularity, allowing proteins to act as control modules in biomolecular circuitry. Protein engineering that commandeers native cell signaling and central dogma functions has led to the development of cell therapies, specialized biosensors, and a deeper understanding of cellular mechanisms. In this review, we examine how protein control modules command circuitry with therapeutic functionality across cellular spatial levels. Extracellularly, signal proteins such as antibodies and cytokines can provide either binary or gradient-sen…

How to assess evidence about Biotechnology
Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
