Earlier sources: Biotechnology
This science thread follows biotechnology through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.
SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.
Open in the map ↗226 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.
Earlier sources
Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Large-scale genome re-annotation uncovers pathogen-specific lncRNA regulators of fungal growth and virulence ↗
Invasive fungal infections pose a serious global health threat. Although core cellular processes are broadly conserved across fungi, only a small fraction of known species cause severe human disease, suggesting that pathogenicity may depend in part on pathogen-specific regulators. However, such elements remain poorly understood because they often lack recognizable homologs, limiting accurate annotation and functional characterization. Here, using the invasive mold Aspergillus fumigatus as a model, we combined transcriptome-guided re-annotation with functional screening to identify previously u…

Digital analysis of spatial expression of stromal fibroblast activation protein alpha (FAP) in DCIS ↗
INTRODUCTION: The presence of non-progressing ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) cases has raised concerns of overtreatment, necessitating comprehensive risk prediction. The tumour microenvironment, especially cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), plays a key role in DCIS progression. Fibroblast activation protein alpha (FAP), a CAF biomarker, has shown prognostic potential, but its clinical significance and spatial organization in DCIS remain rarely discussed. METHODS: In this study, we employed a digital pathology pipeline to quantify stromal FAP expression and map its spatial organization. A t…

Reference Genome Choice Shapes RNA-Seq Quantification and Downstream Interpretation in Chinese Breast Cancer Patients ↗
Background/Objectives: Reference genome choice can introduce systematic bias into cancer transcriptomic analyses, particularly for populations underrepresented in standard references. However, its impact on downstream biological interpretation remains insufficiently characterized. Methods: We compared GRCh38, T2T-CHM13, and the East Asian-matched T2T-YAO using bulk RNA-seq data from 148 Chinese breast cancer patients and single-cell RNA-seq data comprising 65,968 cells from paired primary tumors and lymph node metastases. We assessed reference-dependent differences in read mapping, gene expres…

The genome sequence of Musk Stork’s-bill, Erodium moschatum (L. L’Her., 1789) (Geraniales: Geraniaceae) ↗
We present a genome assembly of Erodium moschatum (Musk Stork’s-bill; Streptophyta; Magnoliopsida; Geraniales; Geraniaceae). The assembly consists of two haplotypes with total lengths of 760.61 megabases and 753.14 megabases. Most of the haplotype 1 assembly (98.73%) was scaffolded into 10 chromosomal pseudomolecules. Haplotype 2 was assembled to scaffold level. The mitochondrial sequences have lengths of 71.6, 42.04, 28.57, 55.48 and 26.56 kilobases and the plastid genome assembly has a length of 118.99 kilobases. Gene annotation of this assembly by Ensembl identified 32,084 protein-coding ge…

MPDD: A Curated Database Bridging Membrane Protein-Drug-Disease Landscapes ↗
Abstract Membrane proteins (MPs) are vital drug targets, yet existing resources are fragmented across structural, pharmacological, and disease domains, limiting integrated exploration. To address this, we developed the Membrane Protein-Drug-Disease (MPDD) Database (https://chemyang.ccnu.edu.cn/ccb/server/MPDD/), a curated platform explicitly linking MPs, drugs, and diseases. MPDD currently includes 1523 MP targets, 589 diseases, and 18,489 drugs. It offers multi-dimensional query tools, interactive classification trees, drug property analysis, BLAST search, and co-target network visualization.…

CRISPR-enhanced microalgae for carbon sequestration and carotenoid production: opportunities and fundamental constraints ↗
Microalgae represent a promising biological platform for CO2 sequestration and the sustainable production of high-value metabolites, particularly carotenoids such as lutein and astaxanthin. However, industrial performance remains constrained by low carbon conversion efficiency, reduced photosynthetic performance, and competing metabolic fluxes that limit product yield. The emergence of CRISPR/Cas-based genome engineering has enabled precise and multiplexed modulation of microalgal metabolic networks, offering new opportunities to overcome these limitations. This review critically evaluates CRI…

Knock-Out of Prion Protein Associated with Reactivity and Mitochondrial Abnormalities in a Novel Human Astrocyte Model ↗
Human prion diseases are fatal neurodegenerative diseases caused by misfolding and aggregation of the cellular prion protein, PrP. Current therapeutic avenues focus on the removal of PrP to decrease its availability in the brain. Numerous studies have investigated the role of neuronal PrP, but few have focused on PrP in astrocytes. Here we present a novel human cell model using astrocytes isolated from dorsal forebrain organoids. These cells are more heterogenous than astrocytes that are directly differentiated from induced pluripotent stem cells and better represent cell morphology in the hum…

Association between the C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio and mechanical circulatory support device application in patients with advanced heart failure ↗
Abstract Background The C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) is an easily accessible biomarker that reflects both systemic inflammation and nutritional reserve. This study aimed to evaluate the association between CAR and mechanical circulatory support (MCS) device application in patients with advanced heart failure. Methods This single-center retrospective observational study included 246 patients evaluated for advanced heart failure between January 2024 and December 2024. Advanced heart failure was defined according to European Society of Cardiology criteria. Patients were grouped accor…

ERGA-BGE genome of Valencia hispanica (Valenciennes, 1826): a critically endangered Iberian toothcarp ↗
The reference genome of Valencia hispanica , a critically endangered actinopterygian species endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, is key to unravelling its genetic architecture and adaptation to freshwater ecosystems. This genomic resource will enable targeted conservation efforts and shed light on the species’ essential role in ecological dynamics, including its contributions to algal biomass regulation and role in the aquatic food web while also highlighting the challenges it faces from habitat degradation and invasive species. Furthermore, it offers opportunities to gain valuable insights into…

Chromatin Modifications Orchestrate DNA Repair Pathway Choice: Epigenetics Strategies for Enhancing CRISPR –Cas9‐Mediated Knock‐In Efficiency ↗
CRISPR-Cas9-mediated precise gene knock-in relies on homology-directed repair (HDR) at low frequencies in most mammalian cells, limiting precise gene editing in both research and therapeutic applications. Although multiple strategies have been developed to increase knock-in efficiency, their application can be restricted by technical complexity, limited applicability, or potential safety concerns. In this review, we propose a shift in focus from conventional strategies toward epigenetic methods to increase knock-in efficiency. It has been proved that histone modifications such as H3K36me3, H3K…

How to assess evidence about Biotechnology
Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
