Earlier sources: Biotechnology
This science thread follows biotechnology through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.
SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.
Open in the map ↗239 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.
Earlier sources
Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Beethoven's genome shows elevated genetic susceptibility to otosclerosis ↗
Abstract Background Otosclerosis remains an unconfirmed explanation for Beethoven’s progressive deafness. We assessed susceptibility signals in his published genome. Methods A quality-filtered 138-site otosclerosis score and related 13-locus GWAS score were compared with 503 contemporary European reference individuals. Sensitivity and historical-clinical evidence were appraised. Three AHSG variants underwent targeted genotype and reference-panel comparison. Results Beethoven ranked at the 96.02nd and 95.83rd empirical percentiles; a post-hoc composite ranked at the 98.01st. Excluding five infl

Engineering of CRISPR-BrCas12b System for Efficient Genome Editing in Thermophilic Bacteria ↗
Abstract The development of synthetic biology has brought new opportunities for green manufacturing. A growing number of non-model bacteria are increasingly harnessed as chassis organisms based on their unique physiological features. The thermophilic microorganism Thermus antranikianii holds great potential as a next-generation cell factory, yet its exploitation is constrained by the lack of genetic engineering tools. Here we report a thermostable CRISPR-BrCas12b-based gene editing tool for this thermophile. The BrCas12b mediates precise target recognition and cleavage at 45–70°C, matching the

A nationwide prospective randomized trial for diagnosing developmental disorders demonstrates genome sequencing outperforms standard of care. ↗
Exome (ES) or genome (GS) sequencing are recommended as first- or second-tier molecular tests for patients with developmental disorders (DD), but the clinical utility of GS continues to be debated. This prospective randomized trial involving all Belgian human genetics centers compared the standard of care (SoC) - combining ES and chromosomal microarray analysis or shallow GS - with GS for 567 individuals with unexplained DD. The study was retrospectively registered. The diagnostic yield of GS was 39.8% (113/284) vs. 30% for SoC (85/283) (p = 0.015), mainly due to an increased detection of sing

Information‐Theoretic Framework for Allosteric Communication Pathway Prediction From Protein Structure ↗
Allosteric communication is fundamental to the function of proteins, but identifying the residue-level pathways through which signals travel and their directionality is still a major challenge. Here we present a multi-metric information-theoretic framework that identifies candidate allosteric communication pathways from a single protein crystal structure in seconds. The method combines Transfer Entropy (TE) from the Gaussian Network Model to assign a model-based directional asymmetry to residue-residue coupling, Mutual Information (MI) to quantify coupling strength, and Conditional Mutual Info…

Genome-Wide Association Mapping of Sudden Death Syndrome Resistance in Germplasm from the USDA Soybean Collection ↗
Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS), caused by Fusarium virguliforme , can significantly impact soybean yields. To advance the understanding of SDS resistance in plant introductions, we conducted genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on a set of 351 accessions from the USDA Soybean Germplasm Collection. The analysis revealed seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly associated with foliar SDS resistance; three significant QTL (on chromosomes 3, 9 and 11) were detected with Fixed and Random Model Circulating Probability Unification (FarmCPU) and four (on chromosomes 5, 6 and two on ch

DNA polymerase kappa supports repair-associated DNA synthesis and neuronal genome resilience ↗
Postmitotic neurons must preserve genome integrity for decades despite continuous oxidative, transcription-associated, and environmental DNA damage. Although recent studies have established ongoing repair-associated DNA synthesis in mature neurons, the polymerases that execute this synthesis remain incompletely defined. DNA polymerase kappa (POLK), a Y-family translesion synthesis polymerase, is highly expressed in neurons and undergoes an age-associated redistribution from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, suggesting that loss of nuclear POLK may compromise neuronal genome maintenance. Here, we i

A Unified Unsupervised Framework for Genome-Wide Association Studies in Heterogeneous Populations ↗
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have greatly advanced the discovery of genetic variants underlying complex traits and diseases. Yet in heterogeneous populations, existing GWAS strategies typically either pool all individuals under an assumption of population homogeneity or perform meta-analysis across predefined subgroups, both of which are limited when latent genetic heterogeneity attenuates subgroup-specific effects and masks true associations or subgroup labels are imprecise. Here we present UCALM, a unified unsupervised framework that infers genetically homogeneous subgroups directl…

Switches in alternatively spliced isoforms impact protein and drug interactions in melanoma, ovarian cancer, and acute myeloid leukemia ↗
Abstract Background Alternative splicing is a cellular process and a primary source of proteome diversity. Switches in the Most Dominant Transcript (MDT), where the predominantly expressed isoform changes between normal and cancer samples, have been implicated in disrupting protein interaction networks and driving tumour progression. Thus, identifying switching events in MDT isoforms is crucial for discovering diagnostic biomarkers or therapeutic targets. Methods Here, we present the most comprehensive study on validated MDT-switching events in melanoma, ovarian cancer, and AML. Results We ide…

The landscape of structural variants in male infertility identified by optical genome mapping ↗
Abstract We aimed to determine what kind of structural genomic variants can be detected by optical genome mapping in patients with male infertility and whether such variants may contribute to male infertility. We performed a longitudinal case/control genetic study on patients with male infertility, negative for cytogenetic abnormalities using karyotyping, and molecular testing for chrY microdeletions, and CFTR gene variants, and compared them to healthy male individuals that underwent optical genomic mapping for other reasons. We tested a total of 220 individuals; 88 patients with male inferti…

High Quality, Long-Read Genome Assemblies of Two Virulent Field Isolates of Pyricularia oryzae from Portugal ↗
The fungal pathogen Pyricularia oryzae is notorious for causing blast disease in various important cereal crops, including wheat, rice, millet, and oat. Whole-genome-informed data on this pathogen are necessary to better understand the host adaptability of the fungus, including identifying key determinants of infection to enable more precise disease control. Here, we report highly contiguous genome sequences (using long-read PacBio technology) of two isolates from rice paddies in Portugal, M22.7 and T22.2, which exhibit distinctly aggressive symptoms in rice. Both mitochondrial and nuclear seq…

How to assess evidence about Biotechnology
Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
