THE INTERNET IS THINKING

Earlier sources: Science

Science investigates the natural world through observation, experiments, and mathematical models. Explore papers and developments in biology, medicine, materials, neuroscience, physics, climate, and mathematics; a reported finding is not necessarily established consensus.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

1321 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

A comparative investigation of physics-driven machine learning architectures for consolidation analysis ↗

Physics-driven machine learning has emerged as a powerful framework for forward and inverse modeling of partial differential equations (PDEs), with increasing applications in geotechnical engineering. However, the relative performance of different physics-driven learning strategies remains problem-dependent, and their suitability for typical geotechnical problems has not been systematically established. This study systematically compares four physics-driven machine learning paradigms for consolidation analysis by combining Multi‑Layer Perceptrons (MLPs) and Kolmogorov–Arnold Networks (KANs) wi…

Machine Learning on Heterogeneous, Edge, and Quantum Hardware for Particle Physics ↗

The next generation of particle physics experiments will face an era of challenges in data acquisition, due to unprecedented data rates and volumes along with extreme environments and operational constraints. Harnessing these data for scientific discovery demands real-time inference and decision-making, intelligent data reduction, and efficient processing architectures beyond current capabilities. Crucial to the success of this experimental paradigm are several emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, silicon microelectronics, and the advent of quantum algor…

Sampled-Based Guided Quantum Walk: Non-variational quantum algorithm for combinatorial optimization ↗

We introduce SamBa-GQW, a novel quantum algorithm for solving binary combinatorial optimization problems of arbitrary degree with no use of any classical optimizer. The algorithm is based on a continuous-time quantum walk on the solution space represented as a graph. The walker explores the solution space to find its way to vertices that minimize the cost function of the optimization problem. The key novelty of our algorithm is an offline classical sampling protocol that gives information about the spectrum of the problem Hamiltonian. Then, the extracted information is used to guide the walker…

Detecting quantum properties in physical systems using proxy witnesses ↗

Abstract In practice, it is quite challenging to detect a quantum property, a microscopic property, in a system. In our work, we construct general proxy witnesses of quantum properties to detect their presence in quantum systems and we do so for quantum systems which may possibly be large. In particular, we discuss proxy witnesses for quantum properties like unextendibility, quantum coherence, activation, steerability, and entanglement. We apply these proxy witnesses in some widely considered examples of many-body systems, viz., the quantum Heisenberg models and the quantum J1-J2 model.

Accounting for model error in ensemble variational data assimilation through learned generative dynamics ↗

Many approaches have recently been proposed to combine data assimilation with machine learning for improved forecasts with geophysical models. Here, we focus on combining advanced sequential data assimilation schemes with a generative forecasting model which accounts for complex model errors. This generative model provides a stochastic approximation of the conditional distribution of the successor state given the current state. The proposed variational formulation is a novel one-step weak-constraint 4D-Var scheme in which a learned conditional stochastic forecast replaces the prescribed additi…

Show HN: Lemma, an IDE for reading mathematics (macOS, open source) ↗

I built Lemma while working through The Elements of Statistical Learning (using the Preview app). Kept running into references like "(3.41)" or "by Theorem 2.3" forcing me to scroll back through the entire book. And whenever a proof wasn’t detailed enough, I'd screenshot it, ask ChatGPT to explain, then go back to the PDF to add manual notes. Got pretty annoying. That led me to Lemma: it reads a PDF once (locally), lets you jump around between eq…

Statistical Downscaling of Daily Precipitation from ERA5 Atmospheric Fields to IMERG over West Africa ↗

Global reanalyses are too coarse to resolve the convective systems that produce most West African monsoon rainfall. In this work, we use U-Net based architectures to downscale daily ERA5 fields (0.25°) to IMERG V07 satellite precipitation (0.1°) over West Africa for the June to October seasons of 2000 to 2024, using geopotential, temperature, humidity and wind at three pressure levels together with elevation and land fraction. Adding ERA5 precipitation as input slightly improves performance for this particular challenging region. We find that all the deterministic networks investigated for thi…

How to assess evidence about Science

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
