Earlier sources: Science

Science investigates the natural world through observation, experiments, and mathematical models. Explore papers and developments in biology, medicine, materials, neuroscience, physics, climate, and mathematics; a reported finding is not necessarily established consensus.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

The genome sequence of the scarce Seven-spot Ladybird, Coccinella magnifica Redtenbacher, 1843 (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) ↗

We present a genome assembly from an individual female Coccinella magnifica (Scarce Seven-spot Ladybird; Arthropoda; Insecta; Coleoptera; Coccinellidae). The assembly contains two haplotypes with total lengths of 498.77 megabases and 558.91 megabases. Most of the haplotype 1 assembly (85.36%) was scaffolded into 10 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the X sex chromosome. Haplotype 2 was assembled to scaffold level. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 19.5 kilobases. This assembly was generated as part of the Darwin Tree of Life project, which produces genomes…

HepDecide: A Standards-Oriented, Explainable Clinical Decision Support Prototype for the Chronic Liver-Disease Spectrum—Design, Guideline-Grounded Reporting, and a Leakage-Controlled Retrospective Evaluation ↗

Background/Objectives: Specialist hepatology capacity is small relative to the population needing assessment, so most decisions about whom to investigate for chronic liver disease fall to non-specialists guided by static laboratory indices reported in isolation. This study presents HepDecide, a standards-oriented decision support prototype consolidating stage-specific risk estimation, explainability and guideline-traceable reporting into one physician-facing service, and reports a leakage-controlled retrospective evaluation of its predictive layer. Methods: HepDecide combines stage-specific ta…

Quantum-Enabled Identification of Microbial Subcommunities Associated with Stability and VFA Selectivity in Anaerobic Fermentation ↗

Abstract Mixed-cultured anaerobic fermentation (AF) is increasingly deployed for resource recovery from waste streams, yet process instability and unpredictable volatile fatty acid (VFA) selectivity limit performance. To identify the influential microbes or multimicrobe relationships affecting AF performance, we use a photonic quantum computing algorithm to identify microbial cliques (e.g., strict subcommunities of co-occurring taxa) from two pilot-scale AF reactors, which differed in the organic loading rate (OLR), stability, and VFA profiles. A greater yield of VFA was recovered from the low…

Comparison of antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods for aztreonam-avibactam against NDM-producing Enterobacterales clinical isolates ↗

ABSTRACT Aztreonam-avibactam (ATM-AVI) is a promising therapeutic for New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (NDM-E) infections. We evaluated the performance of disk diffusion and gradient diffusion methods compared with reference broth microdilution (BMD) for ATM-AVI susceptibility testing. A total of 245 non-duplicate NDM-E isolates were included, collected from unique patients at hospitals in Chile and the United States between 2022 and 2024. Nine ATM-AVI non-susceptible isolates from a separate collection were added to enrich for resistant isolates, yielding a total of 25…

Liquid Chromatography/tandem Mass Spectrometry-based Target Engagement of Lysine-specific Demethylase 1 Inhibitor TAK-418 Through Detecting Covalent Adducts in the Brain ↗

Translating pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) from preclinical to clinical is important in successful development of drugs for central nervous system (CNS) diseases. TAK-418 is a clinical candidate of lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) inhibitor with a unique mechanism of action; it covalently binds to flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) to form a compact adduct formylated FAD (F-FAD), thereby minimizing hematological side effect risks. In this study, we established a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS)-based approach for evaluating F-FAD as a target engagem…

State-backend-dependent fidelity of the CCZ gate on superconducting quantum computers ↗

Abstract We present an experimental characterization of the three-qubit controlled-controlled-Z (CCZ) gate on IBM Quantum’s 127-qubit superconducting quantum computers, revealing state-backend-dependent performance variations. Using quantum state tomography (QST), we evaluate the gate’s output-state fidelity when applied to three algorithmically significant input states—the W state, the Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) state, and the uniform superposition state. Each state probes distinct aspects of the reconstructed state fidelity, the GHZ state tests coherence in maximally entangled systems…

Physics-Informed Knowledge Distillation of a Certified Algebraic Oracle for Selective Harmonic Elimination in Nine-Level Inverters ↗

Selective harmonic elimination pulse-width modulation places exact spectral nulls at fundamental-frequency switching, yet its defining transcendental system admits no closed form and is resolved offline, leaving the deployed modulator without an optimality certificate for its angles and without any mechanism for restoring exactness at run time. A Chebyshev change of variables reduces the nine-level, four-angle system nulling the 3rd, 5th, and 7th harmonics to a single monic quartic whose coefficients are closed-form rational functions of the modulation index, certifying a unique angle set per…

The genome sequence of the sow-thistle Tephritis, Tephritis formosa (Loew, 1844) (Diptera: Tephritidae) ↗

We present a genome assembly from an individual male Tephritis formosa (sow-thistle Tephritis ; Arthropoda; Insecta; Diptera; Tephritidae). The primary assembly has a total length of 1,825.83 megabases. Most of the primary assembly (97.22%) is scaffolded into 6 chromosomal pseudomolecules. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 19.9 kilobases. This assembly was generated as part of the Darwin Tree of Life project, which produces genomes for eukaryotic species found in Britain and Ireland.

From Prediction to Generation: Artificial Intelligence Reconstructing the Paradigm of Protein Glycosylation Research ↗

Among post-translational modifications, protein glycosylation is distinguished by its abundance and structural intricacy. Unlike protein biosynthesis, glycan assembly follows no template; it reflects glycosyltransferase/glycosidase competition, sugar-donor availability, and organelle-enforced compartmentalization, yielding heterogeneous glycoforms that confer functional versatility but complicate analysis. Three bottlenecks persist: stereochemical control in chemical glycosylation, ambiguous assignment of occupancy sites, and reproducing native conformations of fully glycosylated proteins. Ado…

Chromosome-level genome assembly and annotation of the parthenogenetic nematode Acrobeloides nanus ↗

Acrobeloides nanus is a species of widely distributed bacteria-feeding nematodes belonging to the family Cephalobidae. It reproduces parthenogenetically, making it a valuable system for studying the consequences of obligate asexuality, and exhibits early developmental processes that differ significantly from the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. Additionally, the species has demonstrated remarkable resistance in extreme conditions, surviving near-complete desiccation through anhydrobiosis. This new chromosome-level genome assembly provides a high-quality reference to study these traits. C…
