THE INTERNET IS THINKING

Earlier sources: Science

Science investigates the natural world through observation, experiments, and mathematical models. Explore papers and developments in biology, medicine, materials, neuroscience, physics, climate, and mathematics; a reported finding is not necessarily established consensus.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

1653 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

NR4A1-Driven Granulosa Cell Ferroptosis Contributes to Obesity-Related Ovarian Dysfunction and Metformin-Mediated Ovarian Protection. ↗

Obesity triggers ovarian dysfunction and female infertility accompanied by granulosa cell damage. Ferroptosis, iron-dependent lipid peroxidation-mediated cell death, participates in multiple reproductive diseases, yet the molecular cascade linking metabolic obesity to granulosa ferroptosis remains undefined. Using high-fat diet obese mice, primary human granulosa cells from obese infertile patients, and KGN cell lines, we identified the nuclear receptor NR4A1 as a key mediator of obesity-induced ferroptosis downstream of PI3K/AKT signaling. Elevated NR4A1 was associated with upregulated ACSL4

Skeletal Muscle Transcriptomic Responses to Concurrent Training With Polyphenols in Ageing Adults: A Randomized Trial. ↗

Background Transcriptomic adaptations of ageing skeletal muscle to concurrent resistance training (RT) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) remain insufficiently characterized. We investigated the effects of a 12-week concurrent RT + HIIT intervention on the vastus lateralis transcriptome in middle-aged and older adults and whether polyphenol supplementation modulated these responses. Methods Thirty-eight adults (55-70 years; 17 polyphenol [PP], 21 placebo [PLA]) with paired skeletal muscle RNA-sequencing data participated in a randomized, double-blind trial. Participants completed a 30

Evaluation of Probiotic Properties and Antimicrobial Substances Produced by Five Lactic Acid Bacteria Against Foodborne and Spoilage Pathogens. ↗

The rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens presents a major challenge to food safety, particularly in preservation approaches. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) gain probiotic recognition by effectively controlling MDR pathogens using antimicrobial substances (AMSs) and bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLISs). The study evaluated the probiotic properties and AMS production potential of five LAB strains: Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NBRC 3070 (LP), Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356 (LA), Lacticaseibacillus casei ATCC 393 (LC), Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG ATCC 53103 (LGG), and Bifido

Weather Jiu-Jitsu: Exploring the Feasibility of Control Paradigms in Weather Foundation Models ↗

Weather Jiu-Jitsu is a control paradigm for extreme climatological events, inspired by chaos theory. As a proposition, small, precise, targeted, and cost-inexpensive perturbations can redirect trajectories of a large dynamical system. This strategy has been demonstrated analytically in the Lorenz-63 system, where a naturally chaotic trajectory switching between two attractors can be confined to a single attractor, indefinitely, via arbitrarily small perturbations. This paper examines the feasibility of Microsoft's Aurora -- a 1.3 billion parameter global atmospheric model -- as a test bed for…

Can we create a `race to the top' for weather forecasts to inform smallholder farmer decisions? ↗

Artificial-intelligence weather prediction (AIWP) models have made it possible to produce high-quality tailored forecasts with limited computational resources. This advance has the potential to benefit hundreds of millions of farmers in low- and middle-income countries who lack access to forecasts of critical weather phenomena. However, it can be difficult for key stakeholders to evaluate forecast quality, risking a "race to the bottom" as cheap but low-quality forecasts crowd out forecasts that would benefit farmers. We propose a set of principles and protocols for evaluating agriculturally-r…

Ranking-Aware Prompt Optimization for Multimodal Clinical Diagnosis ↗

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) are rapidly advancing clinical diagnosis, yet their adaptation pipelines remain anchored to accuracy-based objectives. Clinical data are heavily class-imbalanced: a constant-majority predictor can score above 90% accuracy while being clinically useless. We therefore evaluate and optimize for AUROC, a threshold-free score that ranks positives above negatives and is invariant to class balance. We focus on prompt optimization in MLLMs. Reflective methods such as GEPA use a binary scores matrix with one row per evaluation instance and one column per candida…

    Removing Timing Shortcuts Improves Non-Invasive Brain-to-Text ↗

We find that major reported improvements in decoding words from non-invasive brain recordings are largely reproducible without any brain data. In the influential work of d'Ascoli et al. (2025), time series of brain activity from subjects perceiving continuous speech are segmented into fixed-length windows starting at each word. A neural network then generates predictions for all of the words in a sentence together. Neighbouring windows partially overlap, implicitly revealing the interval between words. Since these intervals indicate the duration of the words spoken, and different words tend to…

Quantum hypothesis testing of non-mixed-unitarity: A multifaceted hierarchy of quantum channel discrimination ↗

Given multiple uses of an unknown quantum channel, we determine whether it is a specified non-mixed-unitary channel or belongs to the set of mixed-unitary channels. Formulating this as a composite channel hypothesis testing problem, we characterize the Stein exponents achievable by parallel strategies under progressively weaker restrictions on probe states and auxiliary memory. In particular, we consider block-i.i.d. probes, which allow arbitrary correlations within blocks of fixed size while remaining i.i.d. across blocks, and derive finite-letter expressions of the corresponding Stein expone…

All Unitaries Have Constant Depth Quantum Circuits ↗

It is well-known that every $n$-qubit unitary can be implemented by a $2^{O(n)}$-depth quantum circuit using single- and two-qubit gates. It has been open whether exponential depth is \emph{necessary} for general unitaries, even when allowing for unlimited number of ancilla qubits. We show, perhaps surprisingly, that all unitaries can be approximated to operator norm $ε$ by a circuit of one- and two-qubit gates of depth $\poly(n,\log 1/ε)$ with $2^{O(n)}$ ancilla qubits. In other words, every $n$-qubit unitary can be parallelized to polynomial depth. Moreover, if we allow unbounded fan-out gat…

How to assess evidence about Science

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
