THE INTERNET IS THINKING

Earlier sources: Science

Science investigates the natural world through observation, experiments, and mathematical models. Explore papers and developments in biology, medicine, materials, neuroscience, physics, climate, and mathematics; a reported finding is not necessarily established consensus.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

1606 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Programmable DNA protonuclei reveal environmental context on protein phase separation ↗

Abstract Understanding protein phase separation in cellular environments remains a major challenge, as ex vivo assays often fail to capture the influence of environmental context – such as crowding, multimodal interactions, and the dynamic properties of the cytosol or nucleus. Here, we introduce programmable DNA-based protonuclei (PN) as nucleus-inspired compartments to probe phase separation of the neurodegeneration-linked protein FUS. We show that FUS partitioning and condensate formation are highly sensitive to nucleic acid sequence, spatial confinement, and viscoelastic properties of the P…

First confirmed record of Centrophorus uyato (Rafinesque, 1810) in Irish waters: integration of morphological traits and DNA barcoding ↗

Abstract We report the occurrence of a mature male Centrophorus uyato (Squaliformes: Centrophoridae) from the Porcupine Bank off western Ireland. A single specimen with a total length of 853 mm was caught by bottom trawl in 2023 at a depth of 660 m. The specimen was identified morphologically and confirmed by molecular taxonomy using DNA barcoding. The morphometric data obtained are consistent with previous descriptions of the species. The cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequence grouped in the same clade as several sequences identified as Centrophorus uyato , supporting the morphological…

Multiport quantum interferometry with universal nonunitary transformations ↗

Quantum interferometry provides a pivotal method for investigating complex photon-photon interaction, enabling various quantum information technologies that beyond the possibilities of classical physics. While such an effective interaction is mostly studied in N × N unitary transformation, m × n nonunitary transformation that relates to lossy multiport quantum interferometry requires a different approach. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a concise yet powerful tool to unravel fundamental features of multiport quantum interferometry with universal nonunitary transformations. To confirm their…

Confronting Physical, Chemical and Temporal Biases in Experimental Algal Biology ↗

Selective bias in algal research often leads to proposals of what are often unreliable causal relationships. Systematic errors mainly arise from ignoring chemical and physical environmental changes along with increased algal biomass during cultures. This paper examines three interacting bias dimensions using hypothetical cultures and literature examples. Selective bias in choosing basic parameters to measure cell properties, such as using chlorophyll as a biomass proxy, or over-reliance on genomics or proteomics without integrating physiological processes can lead to misinterpretation of cellu…

A Hybrid Physics‐Informed Computational Framework for Adaptive Microrobotic Navigation and Causal Structure Discovery in Simulated Non‐Newtonian Environments ↗

ABSTRACT Target optimization and autonomous navigation of untethered magnetic microrobots inside complex environments remain open challenges for computational biomedical engineering. The tumor microenvironment imposes complex physical variations, including cross‐linked extracellular matrices, anomalous subdiffusive particle transport, and shear‐thinning non‐Newtonian fluid behaviors. Classic closed‐loop control schemes utilizing explicit online estimators frequently struggle to balance structural parameter convergence with precise track retention due to conflicting excitation requirements. To…

Silver(I)-mediated amide-to-ester transformation on unprotected peptides for protein chemical synthesis and engineering ↗

Chemical protein synthesis has transformed the preparation of homogeneous peptides and proteins with site-specific modifications. Serine/threonine ligation offers a practical route to access difficult peptides and proteins via its aggregation-breaking intermediate, yet the preparation and regeneration of the prerequisite peptidyl salicylaldehyde ester still require the development of more efficient chemistry. Here, we report a silver(I)-mediated amide-to-ester transformation on unprotected peptides, enabled by an easily introduced N , S -benzylidene thioacetal scaffold. This method can chemose…

Genome-Wide Discovery and Evaluation of Kazakh Ancestry-Informative Markers ↗

Kazakh populations occupy an important position within the genetic landscape of Central Asia and Inner Eurasia, yet compact ancestry-informative marker panels evaluated for Kazakh-related ancestry remain limited. We analyzed genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism data from 624 Kazakh individuals together with data from external reference populations. After harmonization, the discovery dataset comprised 1607 individuals from 41 population groups and 80,766 shared autosomal variants. Candidate ancestry-informative markers were ranked using allele-frequency differentiation and informativeness…

Galactokinase 1 Positively Regulates Mitochondrial Respiration by Phosphorylating TIMM13 as a Protein Kinase ↗

ABSTRACT Galactokinase 1 (GALK1) is a metabolic kinase that phosphorylates galactose. Mutations in GALK1 cause type II galactosemia, which manifests as cataracts and extra‐ocular symptoms. The mechanisms underlying these symptoms are not fully understood. In this study, we explored a novel function of GALK1 beyond galactose phosphorylation. GALK1 is ubiquitously expressed across human tissues, regardless of developmental stage. GALK1 phosphorylates TIMM13 at the Y73 residue. The phosphorylated Y73 stabilizes TIMM13 by electrostatically interacting with two cationic residues, thereby enhancing…

A Phytol-Modified Carbon Veil Paste DNA Sensor for Anticancer Drug Detection ↗

Electrochemical DNA sensors offer a rapid and miniaturizable approach to monitoring drugs that interact with nucleic acids, but their performance depends on the electrode matrix and DNA immobilization strategy. Here, a renewable bulk-modified carbon veil paste DNA sensor was developed by synergistically combining a custom 3D-printed screw-driven housing and a phytol-derived dicationic amphiphile to retain DNA within a conductive fibrous matrix. Carbon veil paste electrode composition and interfacial properties were studied by voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scanning el…

Clinical and genetic characteristics of Chinese patients with piebaldism accompanied by Café-au-lait macules ↗

Abstract Background Piebaldism is a rare autosomal dominant pigmentary disorder characterized by congenital depigmented patches and a white forelock, primarily caused by pathogenic variants in KIT . A subset of patients additionally exhibit Café-au-lait macules (CALMs) and intertriginous freckling, resulting in considerable phenotypic overlap with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and complicating diagnosis. However, the clinical and molecular characteristics of Chinese patients with this uncommon phenotype remain poorly defined. Methods We retrospectively analyzed five unrelated Chinese patients…

How to assess evidence about Science

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
