Earlier sources: Science

Science investigates the natural world through observation, experiments, and mathematical models. Explore papers and developments in biology, medicine, materials, neuroscience, physics, climate, and mathematics; a reported finding is not necessarily established consensus.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

Pressure-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis (100 MPa) of chicken breast: enzyme-dependent effects on hydrolysis efficiency, peptide profile, microbial quality, and oxidative stability ↗

Summary High hydrostatic pressure (HHP) at 100 MPa, applied for up to 12 h depending on the experimental series, was used as an aid to enzymatic hydrolysis of fresh chicken breast (CBM) using three commercial proteases (Alcalase, Bromelain, and Flavourzyme), with atmospheric hydrolysis serving as the control. HHP preserved enzyme activity, with Alcalase retaining 72% of its initial activity after 6 h and increased the degree of hydrolysis (DH) of Alcalase by up to 11%, reaching a maximum DH of 51.7–51.8% across tested conditions. Hydrolysis efficiency further depended on enzyme-to-substrate (E…

Mutation matters: understanding ovarian cancer, its clinical impact with germline variants among Indian women ↗

Abstract Epithelial ovarian cancer is associated with hereditary genetic mutations. This study investigates the genetic landscape and clinical outcomes of epithelial ovarian cancer in Indian patients. Despite the clinical relevance, genetic testing remains underutilized in India, and data on non-BRCA mutations and variants of uncertain significance are limited. This ambispective observational study included 150 ovarian cancer patients from a tertiary center in India (2017–2024). Patients were categorized into four groups based on their genetic testing. results: BRCA pathogenic/likely pathogeni…

Metabolic regulation of DNA methylation across the cardiovascular–kidney–metabolic continuum: mechanisms, tissue specificity, and clinical translation ↗

Cardiovascular–kidney–metabolic (CKM) syndrome describes an interconnected continuum of metabolic, cardiovascular, and kidney dysfunction driven by persistent metabolic stress. Although DNA methylation has been extensively studied in individual metabolic disorders, how systemic metabolic perturbations converge on the methylation machinery and generate tissue-specific responses across this continuum remains unclear. This review integrates biochemical studies, human epigenome-wide association studies, target-tissue methylomes, causal-inference analyses, and intervention studies. We examine three…

siRNA therapeutics for metabolic dysfunction-associated Steatohepatitis: Targets, delivery, clinical evidence, and translational challenges ↗

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver disease worldwide. Its progressive inflammatory form, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), is driven by interacting genetic, metabolic, inflammatory, and fibrogenic processes that complicate therapeutic development. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) is an emerging modality for sequence-specific suppression of genetically supported targets and intracellular proteins that are difficult to modulate with conventional drugs. Chemical modification and liver-directed delivery have impr…

Physics-informed unsupervised battery state-of-charge estimation via temperature-conditioned Mamba and parallel Bayesian inference ↗

In this paper, we propose Mamba-IPLS, a physics-informed, unsupervised algorithm for offline, label-free battery state-of-charge (SOC) trajectory reconstruction. The architecture integrates a Mamba backbone with a Temperature-Conditioned Modulator (TCM) to generate model parameters under different ambient temperature conditions. For a sequence of length N , this Mamba–TCM neural parameter generator requires O ( N ) total work. The generated parameters drive a physical state–space model, where the latent battery states are estimated using a Parallel Iterated Posterior Linearization Smoother (IP…

PEG-Heparin hydrogels allow for the assessment of breast cancer tumouroid response to anti-cancer treatment for personalised medicine ↗

Objectives The validation of accurate three-dimensional (3D) models holds significant importance for anti-cancer drug development and screening processes, aiming to minimise the time and resources lost during their development using conventional procedures. Here, we investigated whether bioengineered PEG-Hep hydrogels, a bioengineered breast tumour model, can be used to characterise the responses of immortalised breast cancer cell lines or primary patient-derived breast cancer tumouroids to anti-cancer treatments in 3D. Methods Drug-hydrogel interactions were first assessed using ultraviolet s…

Microfluidics-Enhanced 3D DNA-Based Points Accumulation for Imaging in Nanoscale Topography ↗

Single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) enables the examination of biological samples at the nanoscale. DNA-based points accumulation for imaging in nanoscale topography (DNA-PAINT) is a flexible SMLM-based approach with a broad capability for multiplexing. However, low signal-to-background ratio and the solution exchange process present challenges for three-dimensional (3D) multitarget DNA-PAINT imaging. In this work, we present DNA-PAINT in microfluidics for enhanced 3D imaging under simple wide-field epi-illumination. We show that imaging in a microfluidic chip reduces background flu…

VIDA: A programmable gasdermin-mediated strategy to broaden mRNA therapeutics ↗

Pyroptosis, a gasdermin (GSDM)-driven form of inflammatory programmed cell death, has long been recognized for its dual function: direct elimination of infected or transformed cells and activation of the immune system via released cellular contents and pro-inflammatory mediators.1 This positions pyroptosis as a highly attractive therapeutic modality2; however, translating this mechanism into safe, precisely targeted interventions has remained challenging, particularly for viral infections.
