Earlier sources: Science
Science investigates the natural world through observation, experiments, and mathematical models. Explore papers and developments in biology, medicine, materials, neuroscience, physics, climate, and mathematics; a reported finding is not necessarily established consensus.
SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.
Open in the map ↗1706 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.
Earlier sources
Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Genome-Wide Characterization of the Wheat Pum Gene Family and Heterologous Functional Analysis of TaPum-III-5b in Arabidopsis Under Salt Stress ↗
Pumilio (Pum)-family proteins are evolutionarily conserved RNA-binding proteins that regulate post-transcriptional processes; however, their specific functions in staple crops, for example, wheat (Triticum aestivum), remain poorly understood. We identified 56 TaPum genes and classified them into three phylogenetic subgroups (I–III). The larger TaPum family size in allohexaploid wheat was associated with retention of A-, B-, and D-subgenome homoeologs, segmental duplication, and tandem duplication. After separating homoeologous pairs, 17 segmental duplication pairs and five tandem duplication p…

Developing a 4-Helix Bundle Protein Engineering Platform for Isolating Rare-Earth Elements ↗
Abstract Rare-earth elements (REEs) are crucial for sustainable industrial processes, but current extraction methods are environmentally damaging. Our research explores using proteins that bind REEs as a potentially eco-friendly alternative for purification. Lanmodulin (LanM) is a natural protein known for its extremely strong (picomolar) affinity for REEs. However, LanM’s disordered structure makes it challenging for engineering. To overcome this, we developed a protein engineering platform based on the stable 4-Helix Bundle (4HB) framework, which has 3 helix-loop-helix regions. We incorporat…

Single-cell mapping of chromosome breaks identifies multiple fragile site classes with distinct DNA replication timing landscapes ↗
Common fragile sites (CFSs) are genomic regions susceptible to chromosome breaks. However, because they were identified using cell populations, low-frequency fragile sites (non-CFSs) could have been overlooked. Here we perform single-cell genome-wide mapping and classification of aphidicolin-induced chromosome breaks. In human osteosarcoma cells, 42% of breaks exhibit features of CFSs. The remaining 58% are non-CFSs that are 'rare' and replicate throughout the S-phase. Among non-CFSs, we identify early-S replicating breaks associated with transcription-replication conflicts, as well as two add…

Characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome of Hierococcyx sparverioides and phylogenetic implications ↗
The species Hierococcyx sparverioides belongs to the order Cuculiformes, family Cuculidae. We present the first complete mitochondrial genome of H. sparverioides (17,264 bp; GenBank PX733929), comprising 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNAs, and a control region, with a structure similar to other Cuculidae. We conducted mitogenome assembly verification, selective pressure and codon usage (RSCU) analyses, tRNA secondary structure predictions, and phylogenetic reconstruction. This study provides novel mitogenome data contributing to understanding of the evolution and phylogenetic relations…

Temporal metabolic alterations in cerebrospinal fluid-derived small extracellular vesicles following severe traumatic brain injury ↗
Severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) initiates complex secondary injury mechanisms that evolve over time and are difficult to monitor using current clinical tools. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) represent a promising source for tracking molecular alterations linked to injury progression. We performed untargeted metabolomics profiling of phosphatidylserine-positive sEV-enriched fractions from the CSF of sTBI patients at Days 1, 3, and 5 post-injury, alongside healthy controls. LC-MS revealed distinct temporal alterations, with 53, 77, and 15 differentially abun…

Validation of Aptamer–Protein Interactions by Biolayer Interferometry: A Study of 88 Candidate Molecules ↗
An aptamer’s low mass confines the label-free response to hundredths of a nanometer, where artifacts mimic binding yet yield computable dissociation constants. To define and test a priori criteria distinguishing binding from artifact, 88 computationally designed aptamers against seven human proteins were studied by biolayer interferometry in two orthogonal configurations, with control antibodies. Six criteria, fixed in advance, are reported as a priori decision rules, not validated requirements. Control antibodies validated 6 of 8 preparations; for the other 68 pairs, the maximum response was…

High-sensitivity C-reactive protein modulates the association between antimicrobial resistance genes pathway and depressive symptoms in first-episode and drug-naïve patients with major depressive disorder ↗
Gut dysbiosis and systemic inflammation are robustly associated with major depressive disorder (MDD), but the relationship between the gut microbiota, their metabolic pathways and inflammation remains unclear in MDD. We enrolled 61 first-episode and drug-naïve patients with MDD and 33 matched healthy controls(HC). Participants data included demographic data, serum inflammatory indices high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils), and gut microbiota (metagenomics sequencing) were involved; depressive symptoms…

Angiopoietin-2 signaling in retinal and choroidal vascular diseases: mechanisms, clinical evidence, and therapeutic implications ↗
Abstract Currently, intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drugs remains the first-line therapy for most pathological retinal and choroidal vascular diseases. However, the suboptimal efficacy of conventional anti-VEGF drugs and the burden of repeated injections compromise treatment outcomes in retinal and choroidal vascular diseases, resulting in limited clinical benefit for patients and a higher likelihood of treatment discontinuation—highlighting a significant unmet medical need in current clinical practice. In pivotal randomized trials, next-generation anti…
