Earlier sources: Climate Science
This science thread follows climate science through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.
SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.
Open in the map ↗34 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.
Earlier sources
Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Climate-informed cryospheric reanalysis via hierarchical Bayesian data assimilation ↗
The cryosphere regulates global cycles of water, energy, and carbon, affecting societies and ecosystems. By assimilating observations into models, we can infer the past trajectory of state variables, generating a cryospheric reanalysis. Existing cryospheric reanalyses typically treat each water year independently, with no pooling of information across years. With sparse and noisy observations, such 'climate-assumed' reanalyses perform poorly, reverting to an assumed yet uncalibrated background climatology. Conversely, Bayesian calibration with static parameters completely pools information acr…

A neural network-based Universal Thermal Climate Index for reliable global thermal-stress classification across extreme weather ↗
Extreme temperatures are the leading cause of climate-related mortality world-wide. Climate-health research and operational weather forecasting require accurate estimates of human thermal stress. The Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) is among the most sophisticated and widely used feels-like temperature metrics. However, its ubiquitous polynomial approximation does not generalize well to extreme weather conditions. Here, we introduce Neural-UTCI, a neural network that calculates UTCI with substantially higher accuracy across global conditions at a lower computational cost for operational…

MW-Nowcast: Six-hour ensemble nowcasting of extreme precipitation ↗
Extending reliable nowcasting of extreme precipitation could provide critical additional time for warnings and emergency response during high-impact events such as flash floods. Radar-based generative machine-learning models have enabled skilful hyperlocal precipitation nowcasting, but accurate prediction of intense precipitation remains confined to the first few hours. Because storm-scale structure is predictable for longer than individual cells, a natural strategy is to predict that structure while generatively modelling only the uncertain local growth, decay, reorganisation and initiation o…

The precipitation of protons and electrons in Jupiter's auroral regions: a statistical comparison based on Juno/JEDI data ↗
Energetic electrons dominate the energy precipitated into Jupiter's auroral regions, but protons precipitate along the same field lines, with a contribution that remains poorly constrained. We statistically compare the precipitating energy flux of protons and electrons in two of Jupiter's auroral sub-regions, the polar (PE) and main (ME) emission regions. We use Juno/JEDI data from PJ3 to PJ66. The magnetic footprint of the spacecraft, computed with the JRM33 and CON2020 field models, is assigned to one of the two sub-regions, and the precipitating energy flux of each species is obtained by in…

Low latency global carbon budget reveals strong land sink recovery in 2025 ↗
The atmospheric CO2 growth rate fell sharply in 2025, from a record 3.76 $\pm$ 0.09 ppm yr-1 in 2024 to 2.06 $\pm$ 0.09 ppm yr-1 (NOAA marine boundary layer observations), below the 2015-2022 mean of 2.47 ppm yr-1, even as fossil CO2 emissions rose by 0.7% to 10.38 GtC yr-1. Here we present a low-latency global and regional carbon budget for 2025, combining three dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) and ocean model emulators with four atmospheric inversions constrained by OCO-2 satellite retrievals. The global net land sink reached 2.36 $\pm$ 0.16 GtC yr-1 in 2025 (DGVMs: 2.04 $\pm$ 0.24;…

Regional climate risk assessment from climate models using probabilistic machine learning ↗
Abstract Effective climate risk assessment is hindered by the resolution gap between coarse global climate models and the fine-scale information needed for regional decision making. Existing downscaling methods struggle to bridge this gap: physics-based methods are too computationally expensive for large ensemble sampling of extreme events, while traditional statistical methods fail to capture multivariate spatiotemporal dependencies crucial to compound risk estimation. Furthermore, current machine learning approaches rely on temporally aligned training pairs, which are unavailable for free-ru…

Carbon source-dependent metabolic states govern redox homeostasis and cofactor biosynthesis in Propionibacterium freudenreichii . ↗
Microbial adaptation to fluctuating nutrient and oxygen conditions requires coordinated regulation of the metabolic network to maintain redox homeostasis within physicochemical and energetic constraints. While oxygen-dependent responses in Propionibacterium freudenreichii (PFR) have been characterized at the transcriptomic level, the role of carbon source in defining system-level metabolic states remains unclear. Here, we investigated carbon source-dependent metabolic reprogramming and cofactor biosynthesis in PFR strain DSM 20271 T using label-free quantitative proteomics integrated with phys

Baroclinic Annular Mode Modulates Global Atmospheric Rivers and Extreme Precipitation ↗
The Baroclinic Annular Mode (BAM) strongly influences extratropical circulation, yet its role in the global hydrological cycle remains unclear. Using ERA5 reanalysis and a global atmospheric river (AR) database, we show that BAM systematically reorganizes AR occurrence and extreme precipitation in both hemispheres. During high-BAM states, AR frequency increases along the flanks of major storm tracks and decreases near their climatological cores, redistributing preferred AR corridors. Relative AR-frequency changes locally exceed 50%, with the most zonally coherent patterns over the Southern Oce…

Multiphysics Simulation Framework for Continuous Ion Transport and Energetics in Atmospheric Pressure Interfaces ↗
Optimizing atmospheric pressure interfaces requires balancing efficient ion transport with unwanted collision activation. The complex environment at the inlet region, including rapid pressure drops, RF/DC electric fields, ion-gas collisions, and space charge effects, makes simulation of this system challenging. In this work, we introduce MuCITE (Multiphysics simulation for Continuous Ion Transport and Energetics), which combines continuous ion injection, precomputed electric and gas flow fields, and particle-in-cell space charge updates. Furthermore, by employing improved impulsive collision t…

Weather and Climate Without Fluid Mechanics ↗
Even if it were possible, attempting to model the motion of a fluid in a pipe by tracking each individual molecule would be an extraordinary waste of computation. The emergent laws of fluid mechanics accomplish the same goal on a laptop instead of a datacenter. But a sufficiently complex fluid such as in Earth's atmosphere again requires a datacenter, this time to resolve the many contortions in the fields making up our weather. Might there be some analogous set of emergent laws that would represent the effect of these perturbations without needing their explicit representation on a numerical…

How to assess evidence about Climate Science
Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
