Earlier sources: Biotechnology
This science thread follows biotechnology through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.
SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.
Open in the map ↗232 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.
Earlier sources
Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Chromosomal breakage in Arabidopsis thaliana neo-polyploids occurs preferentially at candidate fragile sites colocalized with ancient genome rearrangements ↗
Newly formed polyploids often suffer extensive aneuploidy and chromosome rearrangement. We explored whether these are predictable and conserved across genotypes. We quantified whole-chromosome and segmental aneuploidy in progeny arrays of neo-polyploid Arabidopsis thaliana from two accessions (Col-0 and Ler). 29% of progeny had whole-chromosome and/or segmental aneuploidies. Strikingly, segmental aneuploidy arose exclusively from Ler, preferentially maternally, showing that genotype and sex of origin matter. Breakpoints of segmental aneuploidies were non-random, with over 2/3 mapping to five p

The genome sequence of Carline Thistle, Carlina vulgaris L., 1753 (Asterales: Asteraceae) ↗
We present a genome assembly of Carlina vulgaris (Carline Thistle; Streptophyta; Magnoliopsida; Asterales; Asteraceae). The assembly consists of two haplotypes with total lengths of 3,741.35 megabases and 3,695.98 megabases. Most of haplotype 1 (98.7%) is scaffolded into 10 chromosomal pseudomolecules. Haplotype 2 was assembled to scaffold level. The mitochondrial genome has been assembled, with a length of 326.94 kilobases. Gene annotation of this assembly by Ensembl identified 26,885 protein-coding genes. This assembly was generated as part of the Darwin Tree of Life project, which produces

Quantum Approximate Optimisation Algorithm for Protein Sidechain Packing ↗
Sidechain packing is a critical stage in protein folding, with direct implications for structure-based drug discovery. Google DeepMind's tool, AlphaFold2, predicts protein backbone reliably but sidechain positioning less accurately. Recovering the lowest-energy rotamer assignment over a fixed backbone is NP-hard. We present a hybrid quantum-classical pipeline that repacks sidechains on the AlphaFold backbone using the Quantum Approximate Optimisation Algorithm (QAOA), encoding the one- and two-body energies as a quadratic unconstrained binary optimisation (QUBO) problem. We introduce a constra…

Rapid genome-wide purging following tsunami-induced hybridization in a stickleback population ↗
Speciation is the process by which barriers to gene flow evolve between populations. As speciation approaches completion, genome-wide divergence can be maintained in the face of hybridization. Because real-time observations of genomic changes following hybridization in natural populations remain rare, little is known about the processes and mechanisms by which introgressed genomes are purged in nature. Here we report a 9-year genomic monitoring of a tsunami-induced hybrid stickleback population, revealing rapid genome-wide purging within only a few generations. On 11 March 2011, a devastating…

BCAM-AKT2 fusion protein promotes unfolded protein response driven oncogenic signaling in SKOV3 epithelial ovarian cancer cell line ↗
In view of the rapidly increasing evidence that gene fusion mutations are frequent drivers of cancer, a deeper understanding of the molecular and functional hallmarks of specific gene fusions in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is essential. In this work we sought to identify the molecular signature of the BCAM-AKT2 fusion protein in ovarian cancer cell lines and to assess the biological impact of the novel fusion in these cells. Our in-vitro results show that the BCAM-AKT2 fusion protein is engaged in proliferative action within EOC cell lines. Furthermore, RNA-seq analysis shows that the effe…

Hypoglycemic Effect of Hemp Seed Cake Protein Hydrolysates in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Mice ↗
The potential of plant-based bioactive peptides to be used as an alternative or complementary therapy for the safe management of metabolic diseases such as diabetes is garnering increasing attention. In this in vivo study, the hypoglycemic effect of bromelain hydrolysates of hemp seed cake protein is analyzed in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. The results demonstrate that treatment of mice with the hydrolysate at a dose of 200 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks leads to a significant decrease in blood glucose levels (by 39%), serum triglyceride levels (16.44%), total cholesterol (13.50%), and low-den…

Protein-enriched soups as a practical strategy to meet protein needs in older adults ↗
Soups are routinely included in home-delivery meals for the elderly, making them an effective vehicle for increasing protein intake in this population at risk of malnutrition. Adequate protein and essential amino acids, particularly branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), are critical for preserving muscle mass in this group, prompting this study to examine whether enriching vegetable-based soups could improve their nutritional quality. Five soups (pumpkin, lentil, chickpea, mushroom, and split pea) were enriched with animal-derived ingredients, including ham, La Vache qui rit® processed cheeses,…

Ancient Nuclear Genome Duplication Events in Vertebrates Facilitated the Functional Diversification of Ohnologous Cytochrome c : Insights from Buergeria Frogs ↗
In vertebrates, a nuclear gene encoding mitochondrial cytochrome c (CYC) was duplicated and diverged into one with ubiquitous expression (somatic-type) and the other with testis-preferred expression (testis-type). In this study, synteny based phylogenetic analyses suggest that cyc ohnologs originated through whole genome duplication (WGD) events in the common ancestor of vertebrates and have been conserved for approximately 450-540 million years. Molecular evolutionary analyses revealed pervasive purifying selection and an approximate Phe/Tyr dichotomy at position 46 between somatic- and testi…

How to assess evidence about Biotechnology
Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
