THE INTERNET IS THINKING

Earlier sources: Hardware

Hardware is the physical foundation of computing: chips, sensors, devices, networks, and the processes that manufacture them. Follow semiconductor research, compute architectures, and engineering developments alongside their software and energy connections.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

532 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Enhancing System Dynamics Education Through Smartphone Sensor‐Based At‐Home Experiments ↗

ABSTRACT The widespread use of smartphones among college students, combined with the sophisticated sensors these devices contain, enables their use as portable, low‐cost measurement systems when paired with simple physical setups. Such at‐home engineering experiments offer an engaging and flexible learning environment that can enhance students' understanding of key engineering concepts. This paper reports on using the smartphone gyroscope sensor to conduct two at‐home experiments, namely the oscillation of a compound pendulum and the vibration of a cantilever beam, in a junior‐level, lecture‐o…

HAR-ASIC: A Configurable Edge-AI Human Activity Recognition Circuit for Ultra-Low Power Wearable Devices ↗

We present an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) using digital hardware design to maximise energy-efficiency of human activity recognition (HAR) in autonomous wearable devices. The HAR-ASIC was designed in 22 nm technology and includes a battery of configurable, hardware-optimised feature extraction functions along with a decision tree ensemble classifier, thus serving as an edge AI device for local sensor data processing. We validate the HAR-ASIC based on post-layout process data with five HAR datasets and show the design scalability for configurations to maximise energy saving an…

Conductive Gels for Wearable and Attachable Healthcare Devices: Materials, Sensing Mechanisms, Interfaces and Applications ↗

Wearable and attachable healthcare devices provide valuable insights across a broad range of applications, from health monitoring and disease diagnosis to the assessment of daily human activities. For these devices, both the formation of high-performance electrodes and mechanical, electrical, and physiological stability at human-device interfaces are critically important. Conductive gels, which combine deformable polymer networks with electrical conductivity, show considerable potential as functional materials for such applications. However, existing reviews have often considered material prop…

A Phytol-Modified Carbon Veil Paste DNA Sensor for Anticancer Drug Detection ↗

Electrochemical DNA sensors offer a rapid and miniaturizable approach to monitoring drugs that interact with nucleic acids, but their performance depends on the electrode matrix and DNA immobilization strategy. Here, a renewable bulk-modified carbon veil paste DNA sensor was developed by synergistically combining a custom 3D-printed screw-driven housing and a phytol-derived dicationic amphiphile to retain DNA within a conductive fibrous matrix. Carbon veil paste electrode composition and interfacial properties were studied by voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scanning el…

Multi-resonant Ag–AZO based PCF-SPR sensor for highly sensitive ethylene glycol detection in industrial applications ↗

Abstract A dual-plasmonic Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) based Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) sensor incorporating silver (Ag) and aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) layers is proposed for high-precision detection of ethylene glycol (EG) concentration. The PCF structure, designed using the Finite Element Method (FEM) in COMSOL Multiphysics, employs two plasmonic materials that generate multiple confinement-loss peaks, enabling enhanced detection over a broad spectral range. The novelty of the proposed configuration lies in exploiting the distinct plasmonic dispersion characteristics of Ag and AZO…

XKey: A Unified Deep Learning Framework for Wearable-based Key Generation ↗

Secure key generation from shared biometric signals has emerged as a lightweight alternative to traditional cryptographic key distribution, particularly for resource-constrained wearable devices. However, existing methods are often modality-specific and rely heavily on handcrafted features, which limit their generalizability and efficiency across diverse wearable-based applications. In this paper, we propose XKey, a unified framework that formulates feature extraction from biometric signals as an optimization problem that jointly maximizes inter-device similarity and key entropy. XKey employs…

    A High-Reliability, Flexible, Hybrid-Integrated Temperature Sensor ↗

Accurate, real-time temperature monitoring of traction motors, battery packs, and power electronic modules is a critical requirement for the safety, efficiency, and long-term reliability of electric vehicles (EVs), particularly on the curved, space-constrained, and vibration-prone surfaces found on motor end-windings, battery-module casings, and busbar assemblies. To meet the needs of such automotive curved-surface applications, as well as wearable devices and flexible electronic skin, this paper presents complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) temperature sensor. Its core includes a CM…

Adapting Pretrained Large Vision Models for Sensor-based Activity Recognition ↗

Understanding and recognizing human activities from low-cost wearable sensors has attracted increasing attention in recent years. To achieve this goal, numerous learning models and augmentation approaches have been developed. While effective in certain scenarios, their performance is often limited due to the distribution shift between the training and testing data collected from different users or different body placements. Moreover, collecting large-scale and diverse sensor training data is costly and labor-intensive, which further exacerbates the data scarcity problem in HAR. To mitigate the…

A Low-Phase-Noise InGaAs/GaAs BiHEMT Balanced Colpitts VCO with Deep-Learning-Optimized On-Chip Inductor for Satellite Communication Applications ↗

In this communication, a balanced Colpitts VCO with low phase noise and a wide tuning range is presented, which was implemented using a 2 μm GaAs BiHEMT process. To improve phase noise, a noise-shifting technique introduced by the cross-coupled pair was applied. A deep-learning-assisted genetic algorithm was employed to optimize the quality factor of an on-chip inductor, further improving the phase noise. Additionally, three-bit switches were utilized to expand the tuning range of this VCO. Finally, a VCO prototype was implemented and fabricated for verification. The measurement results demons…

SoleSense: A Shoe-Based Wearable for Sound Event Localization and Detection in Urban Environments ↗

Detecting and localizing acoustic events from a person or device is important for a wide range of applications, including improving pedestrian safety, increasing situational awareness, or for interacting with digital assistants. Compared to radio frequency waves, acoustic waves are naturally more affected and attenuated by the atmosphere, making the range of sensing limited. Additionally, naturally quiet sounds like footsteps are difficult to detect. We propose SoleSense, a shoe-based platform with microphone arrays attached to the soles of both shoes, for sound event localization and detectio…

How to assess evidence about Hardware

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
