THE INTERNET IS THINKING

Earlier sources: Hardware

Hardware is the physical foundation of computing: chips, sensors, devices, networks, and the processes that manufacture them. Follow semiconductor research, compute architectures, and engineering developments alongside their software and energy connections.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

521 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Dynamics, Statistical Analysis, and Spectral Line-Shape of Semiconductor Lasers Subject to Optical Feedback ↗

We explore how optical feedback (OFB) strength affects the dynamics, noise (such as relative intensity noise (RIN) and frequency noise (FN)), probability density distribution (PDD), and spectral line-shape characteristics of semiconductor lasers (SLs). We examined photon number (PN) fluctuations, frequency shift (FS) fluctuations, and the corresponding RIN and FN spectra, along with PN-PDD and FS-PDD, across six operating states. Our findings clearly demonstrate that OFB strength transforms operational states, noise characteristics, and PDD shape and width. In CW modes, both RIN and FN decreas…

Noninvasive detection of bacterial biofilms using an insect olfactory brain-based gas sensor ↗

Bacteria emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be targeted for disease detection. Biological olfactory systems have keen senses of smell, can detect VOCs at low concentrations, and are naturally adapted to classifying mixtures of VOCs as odors. Here, we employed locust (Schistocerca americana) olfactory neural circuitry to differentiate biofilm and planktonic cultures of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus using their odors. In vivo extracellular neural recordings were taken from the second-order olfactory processing center (antennal lobe) of locusts. The VOCs from biofi…

Toward GPU-Resident Climate Models: A Feasibility Study on Lossy Compression for the Spherical Harmonic Transform's Communication Bottleneck ↗

Operational pseudospectral atmospheric models such as the ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) run today almost exclusively on CPUs; GPU ports are under active development but not yet used in production. These models rely on the Spherical Harmonic Transform (SHT). Each time-step requires forward and inverse SHTs, and both passes depend on global pencil transposition that redistribute multi-dimensional arrays across compute nodes. At large node counts these global collectives dominate wall-clock time. We investigate GPU-resident lossy compression, using representative fields from the DYAMO…

How to assess evidence about Hardware

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
