Earlier sources: Manufacturing
This hardware thread follows manufacturing through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.
SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.
Open in the map ↗47 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.
Earlier sources
Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Additive manufacturing and post-processing needs: an analysis of defect mitigation and performance enhancement ↗
Additive manufacturing (AM) has revolutionised the production of complex metallic components by enabling unprecedented geometric freedom; however, the layer-by-layer fabrication process inherently generates a complex landscape of defects, including extreme residual stresses, internal porosity, microstructural anisotropy, and high surface roughness. These structural anomalies significantly degrade the fatigue life and operational reliability of as-built parts, rendering them unsuitable for direct structural applications and necessitating a comprehensive, highly engineered post-processing workfl…

Implementing an Intensified Dynamic Perfusion Process for Biologics Manufacturing at Scale and Continued Development. ↗
Perfusion cell culture is increasingly adopted to improve productivity, reduce footprint, and enable integrated continuous bioprocessing. The high-intensity, low-volume perfusion (HILVOP) process for antibody production was implemented at both 100 L pilot and 500 L manufacturing scales for early clinical supply, and development work was completed in tandem to create a next-generation HILVOP platform. The HILVOP process employs a dynamic two‑stage strategy, using cell‑controlled perfusion during the growth phase followed by product removal during the intensified production phase via tangential

Additive manufacturing in premium brands: The potential for competitive differentiation and strategic marketing management ↗
Although additive manufacturing technologies have attracted considerable attention within the broader Industry 4.0 ecosystem, existing literature predominantly examines them through operational and engineering-oriented perspectives, leaving their strategic marketing implications comparatively underexplored. This study addresses that gap by examining how additive manufacturing technologies are integrated into competitive differentiation and strategic positioning processes within premium industries. A qualitative multiple case study design was adopted, and corporate and independent industry docu…

Digital infrastructure for the inclusion of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in design for distributed manufacturing and assembly construction ecosystems ↗
The construction sector faces growing pressure to meet net-zero targets while addressing skills shortages, fragmented supply chains, and the limited participation of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs), despite SMEs delivering most UK construction output. Existing centralised models of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) often exclude SMEs, highlighting the need for alternative approaches that support inclusive, low-carbon industrial transformation. This paper presents a Design for Distributed Manufacturing and Assembly (DfDMA) framework that develops the shared digital and organisation…

SA-DETR: Lightweight Structure-Aware Defect Detection Model for Sustainable Low-Carbon Steel Manufacturing Based on RT-DETR-L ↗
Steel manufacturing is a typical high-energy and high-carbon industry. Undetected tiny surface defects such as scratches and crazing lead to massive waste of steel raw materials and extra energy consumption in subsequent processing, while heavy detection models may increase the computational energy demand of on-site inspection systems. The purpose of this study is to develop a lightweight defect detection model that improves the recognition of weak-semantic and structurally distinctive surface defects while reducing computational cost for industrial deployment. To achieve this objective, we pr…

Analysis of energy consumption and pollutants in additive manufacturing: a comparison of ABS, PLA, and PETG by operational stages ↗
This study presents a multi-domain experimental framework for evaluating the environmental and energetic behavior of desktop fused deposition modeling (FDM) under controlled enclosure conditions. A sensor-instrumented data acquisition platform was developed to continuously monitor chamber temperature, relative humidity, electrical power demand, carbon dioxide, total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), and fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) throughout four operational stages: Sensor Preheating, Printer Initialisation, Printing, and post-print Resting. An 18-run experimental matrix was implemente…

Integrating Facility Layout Planning, Discrete-Event Simulation, Machine Learning, and Immersive Visualization: A Comparative Study of Two Manufacturing SMEs ↗
Facility-layout decisions in small manufacturing firms are often evaluated with heterogeneous indicators, which complicates comparison and reproducibility. This study develops a traceable decision-support workflow and applies it to two manufacturing SME cases in Cotopaxi, Ecuador. Systematic Layout Planning and Guerchet were used as the common core, complemented by case-specific location and prioritization tools, three-dimensional discrete-event simulation in FlexSim, bounded surrogate-model screening, and Meta Quest 2-based immersive review. IPMATOAH’s model comparison increased output from 1…

Deep learning prediction of cold-side quality characteristics from hot-side infrared sensing in glass bottle manufacturing ↗
Quality inspection in glass bottle manufacturing traditionally occurs on the cold side of the production line, after the containers have cooled sufficiently for contact-based or optical measurements. While this ensures reliable defect identification, it introduces a substantial delay between forming and feedback, limiting opportunities for real-time process control and waste reduction. In this study, we present an industrial Artificial Intelligence (AI) framework that predicts cold-side quality characteristics directly from hot-side infrared measurements acquired immediately after mold release…

Development of a novel hybrid powder bed friction stir additive manufacturing-friction stir forging process for fabrication of AA6061 spur gear: process development, thermomechanical modeling, and process-structure-property correlation ↗
Existing manufacturing processes often struggle to fabricate lightweight gears with reliable mechanical properties while simultaneously achieving full densification, microstructural homogeneity, and near-net-shape geometric complexity. In the present work, a novel hybrid solid-state manufacturing route combining powder bed friction stir (PBFS) additive manufacturing and friction stir forging (FSF) was developed to fabricate AA6061 spur gears from powder feedstock by sequentially integrating both processes within a single manufacturing setup. The process involved layer-wise deposition of AA6061…

Bidirectional immersive digital twin for real-time monitoring and supervisory interaction in PLC-controlled manufacturing ↗
Digital Twins are increasingly used for monitoring and interaction with automated processes, but integrating immersive environments with active control systems while preserving controller authority remains challenging. This study presents an operational and supervisory immersive Digital Twin for a PLC-controlled automated filling process, enabling bidirectional communication between a physical module and its virtual representation. The architecture integrates a Siemens S7-1200 PLC, OPC UA, MQTT, and a virtual reality environment. PLC-reported process states are mapped to corresponding virtual…

How to assess evidence about Manufacturing
Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
