Earlier sources: Compute

This hardware thread follows compute through original research, public projects, and source reports. Read the evidence below to see which developments are represented in SYMTRI’s archive.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

27 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Understanding Accelerator Compilers via Performance Profiling ↗

Accelerator design languages (ADLs), high-level languages that compile to hardware units, help domain experts quickly design efficient application-specific hardware. ADL compilers optimize datapaths and convert software-like control flow constructs into control paths. Such compilers are necessarily complex and often unpredictable: they must bridge the wide semantic gap between high-level semantics and cycle-level schedules, and they typically rely on advanced heuristics to optimize circuits. The resulting performance can be difficult to control, requiring guesswork to find and resolve performa…

Show HN: Nibia Fabric – Turn everyday computers into a shared AI compute cluster ↗

I built NIBIA Fabric, an open-source distributed LLM inference system that pools CPU and RAM across macOS, Linux, and Windows machines. It builds on llama.cpp, with capacity-aware scheduling, adaptive memory reservation, persistent tensor caching, and an OpenAI-compatible API. I’ve validated the current alpha on three physical machines across several models, including a 30B-class Qwen model, as well as GPT-OSS 20B. Feedback on the architecture an…

Bandwidth, Latency, and 400 Million Kilometers: The Case for Mars-Local Compute ↗

There have been recent proposals for human settlements on Mars in 2030s. Any human activity on Mars must be preceded by extensive robotic exploration. However, Mars exploration is bottlenecked by the low bandwidth, intermittent Mars-Earth link. For example, HiRISE, a high-resolution camera onboard the Martian orbiter MRO imaged less than 3% of Mars over eleven years, even though MRO's low resolution Context Camera had mapped more than 99% of Mars in that time. We present a systems case for shared compute for Mars exploration. Such Mars-local compute, paired with advances in computer vision and…

How to assess evidence about Compute

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
