Earlier sources: Security

Digital security protects systems, software, accounts, and information from misuse. Explore cybersecurity, vulnerabilities, threat intelligence, cryptography, privacy, and identity, with links to the underlying advisories and research.

SYMTRI organizes observations from public sources into a living map. Connections reflect shared subject matter; they do not establish causation or endorse a source.

619 classified signals in the fourteen-day window. Recent momentum: steady. These counts include signals awaiting readable evidence.

Earlier sources

Up to ten sources with readable evidence, ordered by their feed timestamp. These archive sources can be older than the live fourteen-day window. This list is a sample, not a measure of total activity. Dates distinguish paper publication, repository creation, model/dataset activity, Hacker News posts, and KEV catalog additions. “First archived” records when SYMTRI first stored the signal.

Building Sound Evaluation Practices for Rust-Based Security Frameworks ↗

Background: Rust is a modern programming language known for its focus on usability, concurrency, and security. However, empirical studies reveal that Rust is still affected by software vulnerabilities, with hundreds of memory safety issues found in Rust programs, including Rust's standard library. As a result, additional tool-assisted security testing is crucial to enhance the security of Rust code. Evaluating such tools, however, is highly complex. While there is substantial research on evaluating C/C++ security frameworks, including test sets, serious issues in published evaluations have bee…

Towards Efficient Threat Intelligence Instruction Tuning via Quality-Aware and Optimal Transport-Guided Data Selection ↗

High-quality data is essential for improving instruction tuning in threat intelligence analysis. However, existing methods for generating cybersecurity instruction data lack reliable quality assessment mechanisms, and gradient influence-based data selection methods primarily focus on single-sample matching, failing to cover diverse and complex security capabilities. To address these issues, we propose CTI-TDS, a Targeted Data Selection method for instruction tuning in Cyber Threat Intelligence analysis. Specifically, we first filter high-quality CTI instructions by integrating instruction styl…

    P2Patch: Exploit-Guided Vulnerability Repair ↗

Large language models are increasingly deployed as autonomous agents for automated program repair, patching software vulnerabilities through multi-step reasoning and tool use. Yet these systems typically validate a patch against the same evidence used to construct it -- a static alert, sanitizer trace, published exploit, or test suite. A patch that blocks that one piece of evidence can therefore look successful while remaining vulnerable to the same vulnerability with some variation. We present P2Patch, a generative adversarial repair system that treats each patch as a new attack target. Start…

Secret Sharing from Non-Extractable Randomness ↗

Bosley and Dodis (TCC 2007) proved that a class of imperfect randomness sources that suffices for information-theoretic encryption of messages longer than the logarithm of the key length must admit deterministic extraction of nearly uniform bits, and asked whether the same is true of two-out-of-two secret sharing. Aggarwal, Chung, Obremski, and Ribeiro (TCC 2022) gave a positive answer for schemes that are in addition leakage-resilient or non-malleable; the original question remained open. We answer it in the negative. For every $b\ge2$ we construct a class of flat sources on $\{0,1\}^{b+2}$,…

    FreeSBee: A Constant-Time Compilation Pipeline ↗

Constant-time execution is an important security property, especially for IoT devices, that prevents the leakage of sensitive information over timing side-channels. However, achieving constant-time execution is very hard when going down to the cycle level, at least on realistic devices. A lot of research is concerned with producing tools that either determine whether code is constant-time or that ensure it is compiled into a constant-time binary, with various degrees of accuracy. In this work, we present and evaluate a full workflow for hardening against timing side-channels during compilation…

GeoCloak: An Agentic Framework for Semantics-Preserving Geolocation Privacy via Peripheral Clue Manipulation ↗

The rapid advancement of large vision language models (LVLMs) has made geolocation inference from images highly accurate and accessible. This poses serious privacy risks: a passive adversary with black-box LVLM access can infer a user's location from a single photo with no metadata. Existing protection methods rely almost exclusively on adversarial perturbation, which introduces perceptible visual artifacts and utility degradation. We identify the visual-geolocation asymmetry: geolocation-decisive clues, such as street signs, tend to be visually peripheral but dominate location inference. Expl…

CoRedSkill: Stealthy Skill Composition Attacks via AST-Guided Injection ↗

Agents extend their capabilities through reusable skills that package instructions, executable code, and resources. Composing these skills enables complex task workflows, but their dependencies can also connect malicious operations across skills, making their combined intent difficult to identify through individual-package auditing. We introduce CoRedSkill, a compositional red-teaming method that forms stealthy attacks through cooperating skills while preserving their original utility. CoRedSkill decomposes an existing workflow into interdependent skills and embeds attack operations in task fu…

How to assess evidence about Security

Check each original source for its methods, release status, limitations, and supporting data. A repository announcement, a preprint, and a published study provide different kinds of evidence. SYMTRI’s subject classification helps discovery; it does not independently validate the source’s claims.
