Nonlinear Modeling for the Construction of a Synthetic Index: An Approach Based on UMAP and Random Forest Applied to the Energy Performance of OECD Countries ↗

This article proposes a hybrid method for constructing composite indices in the context of decision-making through the integration of Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP) and the Random Forest algorithm. Unlike Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), the proposed method derives fully data-driven weights from nonlinear structure in the data, rather than relying on linear covariance or expert judgment. The method is an operations research model within the framework of multicriteria decision analysis, applied to the evaluation of energy perform…

Extremal Hysteretic Energy Dissipation in a Dry-Friction Vibration Isolator with a Longitudinally Slit Cylindrical Shell and Deformable Filler ↗

Vibration isolators based on a slit cylindrical shell with an elastic filler are proposed for the needs of the mining, oil and gas, and construction industries; in these devices, energy dissipation is provided by the effects of distributed positional dry friction between the contacting elements. Such vibration isolators are intended to operate under considerable loads and severe dimensional constraints, which requires a combination of high load-bearing capacity, sufficient compliance, and efficient energy dissipation. The aim of this work is an analytical study of hysteretic energy dissipation…

Cell-Wise Fault Warning for Lithium-Ion Battery Packs Using Local Outlier Factor and Validity-Gated Extreme-Value Thresholds ↗

Early fault warning in lithium-ion battery packs is challenged by weak labels and changing operating conditions. This study combines cell-wise Local Outlier Factor (LOF) scoring with validity-gated Streaming Peaks-Over-Threshold (SPOT). Five descriptors are used to summarize each seven-sample median-centered voltage trajectory, and the maximum cell LOF is logarithmically transformed into a pack score. A generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) supplies the threshold when calibration diagnostics support the fitted tail; otherwise, an empirical quantile is used. Across nine real-world vehicles and…

Comparing Symmetry-Adapted Perturbation Theory to Intermolecular Energy Decomposition Analysis Based on Absolutely Localized Molecular Orbitals ↗

Abstract Energy decomposition analysis (EDA) can provide insight into noncovalent interactions, even though the individual energy components (electrostatics, Pauli repulsion, polarization, dispersion, etc.) are not uniquely defined within quantum mechanics. The present work examines the two titular EDA schemes and elucidates the degree of transferability between their components. We first demonstrate that a many-body dispersion (MBD) model can replace the conventional definition of dispersion in symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT), preserving reasonable accuracy as compared to third-or…

The 28 April 2025 blackout in the Spanish interconnected power system from a converter-technology perspective and the need for grid reinforcement ↗

Abstract The rapid growth of inverter-based renewable generation is changing the stability constraints of modern power systems. The Iberian blackout of 28 April 2025 provides a critical case for examining this transition. This study links converter behaviour, published laboratory experiments, reported event ordering and engineering reinforcement options. Public system-level records are consistent with voltage-led propagation: voltage excursions and generation disconnections preceded the steepest frequency decline under low demand, high photovoltaic output and reduced synchronous support. This…

Electrospun PVDF / BaTiO 3 ‐ TiO 2 Nanocomposite Yarns for Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting ↗

ABSTRACT In this study, we assess the piezoelectric performance of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposite fibers incorporating a hybrid Barium titanate‐Titanium dioxide (BTO‐TiO 2 ) filler. The 1 wt% PVDF/BTO‐TiO 2 electrospun fiber mat yields a maximum peak‐to‐peak output voltage (V pp ) of 5.47 V and a current of 1.823 μA under tapping, resulting in a maximum instantaneous output power density of 2.49 μWcm −2 at 3 MΩ load. A pressing mode using two fingers generates a smaller voltage of 0.36 V. Furthermore, manually twisted piezoelectric nanogenerator yarns (PENGYs) were fabricated f…

Automated safety interpretation of crack-aperture for concrete dams using mutation-aware visual-sensor fusion and knowledge-augmented reasoning ↗

Automated safety interpretation of concrete-dam cracks remains challenging because crack-gauge records may be incomplete, abnormal changes are difficult to distinguish from normal evolution, and monitoring outputs are not readily translated into traceable decisions. This paper proposes a mutation-aware visual–sensor fusion and knowledge-augmented framework. A deep learning model, multiscale dynamic spatial YOLOv11n (MDS-YOLOv11n), extracts crack widths from images and aligns them with crack-gauge measurements to supplement missing observations. Autoformer models the fused sequence; a dynamic t…

Redesigned Electricity Institutions with Micro-Nodal Competitive Markets Reduce Electricity Costs Substantially and Induce Dynamic Energy Innovation ↗

The electricity grid is a collective good that tends toward monopoly. It links private electricity generation to private electricity use. Its institutions converged near-globally at the end of the 20th century. Large-scale producers have separated ownership from transmission system operators. Quasi-markets link them. New challenges and opportunities render that design obsolete. Solar and wind energy are low-cost but intermittent. Decentralized secondary electricity is also becoming low-cost. Fast switches enable real-time adjustments in electricity production and use. Low-cost High-Voltage-Dir…
